Is it a REAL truck or a "Wrangler 4 dr. with a Birth Defect" ?

Is it a real truck, or just another Honda Ridgeline : ie: a 4 dr. Wrangler with a Birth Defect?

It's a body on frame vehicle with solid axles and a separate bed.

What more does it take to be a "real" truck? Whatever that means.

More like an Explorer sport trac. Remember those? I still honestly am failing to see a valid use for this thing.

Really? Just get a trailer.

I can see why a jeep fan would like to have a gladiator. It can tow over 7,000lbs in the right configuration, and the long wheelbase, high center, and departure problems aren't a big deal for the way most four door owners use their wranglers. Hardcore offroad with a gladiator doesn't look smart, but 90% of wrangler owners could go all the same places with a gladiator.

To me, having a mid size truck with a solid front axle, jeep/chrysler/fiat reliability, and a large price difference is a no go. I've also towed 4000lbs with a 4.0L V6 that made 260 lb-ft of torque. That sucked. I wouldn't want to regularly tow 4000lbs behind a 3.6L Pentastar even with an 8 speed automatic.

For me, owning a two door rubicon, I'd be better off buying a new F250 6.2L or 7.3L V8 gasser with the same money and just keep the two door rubicon. I live in a state without annual property taxes on vehicles, I don't live in a sub division, and insurance is relatively cheap. If I could only have one vehicle, the gladiator might work.

Here is why I posed the question: "Real truck or a Wrangler with a Birth Defect"

Look at the concept Wrangler Truck for 2016.

I have 4 Jeeps now and have had many in the past. I am a Jeep person.

I have an 08 GC, 91 Cheorkee, 98 Wrangler TJ and a 13 JK 2 Dr.

I love them all.

Jeep has been promising a Truck for 20+ years. In 2016 they showed us the Jeep above.

I WOULD BUY THAT JEEP TRUCK EVEN IF I DIDN'T NEED IT!!!

But as usual, Jeep puts out a great concept and then wimps out with a 4 dr wrangler with a child's sand box on the back and calls it a "Jeep Truck" I would call it a "Trick Truck".

The truck above is probably (in truth) no more useful than the one they gave us. BUT, it is one you would leave out on the drive so everyone could see your "REAL JEEP TRUCK"

And I do agree with Wharfrat, putting a trailer on the back of any Wrangler is better than the new Jeep Truck, and a whole lot cheaper. (and you can put any size of trailer behind your Jeep.)

Just try to put a motorcycle or snowmobile in the back of the new Jeep Truck? (good luck with that.)

I sure it will be a good truck for those who like to play in sand boxes. (Just kidding)

What the new Jeep Truck buyer is really getting is a 4 dr. Scrambler. Not a real Jeep truck.

A real Jeep truck is not a 4 dr. Wranger or Scarmbler, with a square box. It's a REAL Jeep Truck, and THIS is a really Jeep Truck.

Yikes! I didn't even know that was a thing. I've lived in Florida for a long time and guess I've missed out on things like annual property tax on vehicles.

I do not mean to get this thread side-tracked but I was surprised by that.

The explanation doesn't make the original post any less absurd. They made the truck in the most popular configuration for midsized trucks, and made it more capable than any of the others. The bed is almost exactly the same size as any of the other midsized trucks short beds.

The Gladiator pictured above is from 2005...two years before the debut of the JKs/JKUs.

Me? I think the current Gladiator is a "real truck"....it's real enough for me. If you're the type that does a lot of overlanding, it may be the perfect vehicle considering it will have a bigger payload over the 4dr Wranglers.

My only complaint is the length and no V8. I'd love a 2dr extended cab with a V8 as an option.

THAT'S the one I'd like to have. The Jeep J6. I watched the TFL Trucks video about it this morning. Clearly the best of the concepts they showed. I love how they did the badging on it too.

Even the color on it is perfect (Cosmo Blue?).

Funny you single out the Ridgeline...it just scored higher than Gladiator in a C&D mid-size pickup comparison. Ridgeline took 2nd place just ahead of the 3rd place JT

And you can take the danged doors and top off...

It's gonna take me a few years to decide whether I want to buy one, but the suggestion that this is any less a truck than, say, a Tacoma puzzles me.

This thread is stupid.

Gladiator has a 6.5' load floor with the tailgate down, plenty big enough for ATV or dirt bikes.

It also has a 1,600 lb. payload and 7,650 lb. tow rating properly configured, which puts it in line with many full size half-ton trucks.

And, it has the most interior space for occupants in the segment.

It also has two engine options, one which is a multi-year Ward's Best Engines award winner, and the other which will lead the entire segment in available torque.

If the Gladiator isn't a "real truck" then I'm not sure what is. A Ram 3500 I guess?

I think we'll need a ruling from The 2 Door Only Crew on this.

I forgot that's a 4 door. They don't make a 2dr version, just like the Gladiator.

At least I can say I drove that truck when I was in the Army. I wouldn't want to pay for all those tires though.

Ward's Best Engines award winner for what? Leaking oil or failing heads?
Im sorry my 2018 gen1 made in usa pentastar is pinging and leaks oil from day one - i never had an engine oil leak on a new vehicle ever... even on older ones.

Gladiator is a nice looking truck (saw some of them driving around Sacramento) but really with "pentastar" in it i wouldn't pay more than 30K.

I know some folks have good experience with this motor and i love my JK but still after 8 years in production the build quality is still low.
