Saw my First Gladiator Today

I'm in Tallahassee Florida and as I was driving by the Tallahassee DCJ dealership today I spotted a gorgeoous RED Gladiator out on the grass on the corner of US 90 and NW Capital Circle. I didn't have time to stop but hope to get a test drive tomorrow. If I can get by there I'll take a bunch of pics too.

Damn it looks GREAT and I was just about to give up on getting a Jeep I really like.

You will fall in love. Especially once you investigate all the technology in it..... honks the horn when you air down to a preset pressure, honks the horn when you air up to a preset pressure, cameras front and rear, built in inclinometer, and a bunch more stuff I can’t remember right now.
I thought I had the bug with the JLU, then I started looking at the JT

Saw one today on local dear lot... Not impressed.. Looks odd and the interior is basically just a JL...

The one I saw was an Overland, had a sticker of $53K, had mini van type tires on it and was white with a black hard top... Overall, and maybe it was just the color and the tires, but I thought it was fugly...

I didn't see any others on the lot but the dealer website lists 6 for sale so maybe the others are in transit...

Here is a photo of it from the dealer website:

Dealer got in a Billet Silver Overland @ 4p.m today... "Killer" Black leather interior -yes it has a JL interior - yep stickered at 51k. Like the tailgate operation! He also got a Red Sport.. Drawing a crowd, 8 people stopped as they drove by. Will really be a "looker" w/33's or 35's

IMO. The only way the Gladiator especially a 4 door would look cool if it had a .50 cal Ma Deuce mounted on top it.

I swear the tires looked like they belonged on a mini van and that color combo is :barf:

Cameras are everywhere, who has built in inclinometers or pressure alerts for airing down and airing up, or a camera wash system? Land Rover? Toyota? Ford? Nissan?
I haven’t heard of these on any other vehicles (haven’t looked either though).

In all honesty all of Jeep’s trucks were fugly when they came out.
10, 20, 30, or 40 years later and everybody loves them??
I wonder if it will be the same with this one. If you deck it out it actually doesn’t look too bad. But decked out it will put one heck of a dent in your wallet

Kind of has a ring to it...

I guess if they don’t sell, marketing can use the old ad campaign..

I know the Ford edge has/had a camera washer system. If that car does I'm sure others do as well. I just don't know off the top of my head of any others. Kinda useless imho. I've needed to clean my 360 camera twice in 2 years.

Raptor has had inclinometer for many years as well as many other off road system readings such as power split to front and rear, turn radius angle etc

The preset air up and and down notification is cool. That's a first I've heard of and I'd like other companies to steal that feature. 😁

Well... I guess I'm the first kid on the block to test drive one... I was completely underwhelmed. It felt underpowered at best and sluggish. I was also not impressed with the lack of technology. For the $53K sticker price I thought I would at least wow me a little bit.

Butt ugly? Well... In a word... YES! But the red color is great to look at.

This one was the Overland model and had mini-van tires as well... C'mon Fiat... It's an American TRUCK!!! For $53K at LEAST how about some truck tires? Really?

One more thing... At 60mph I could move the steering wheel side to side about 2.5" with no detectable reaction from the truck? WTF?

My 2002 Tacoma 4wd pickup with 210K miles on it many, many of which are offroad miles has NO slack in the steering and feels more responsive.

By the way... The sticker says it's a 2020 model. I was expecting 2019... Interesting.... I'm thinking Fiat is trying to get ahead of Ford and Chevy for new model releases for this year. We went from rumors of a Gladiator release to "HERE THEY ARE" in a few very short months.

Tacoma owners are just as loyal as Wrangler owners. I think the Gladiator will take more sells away from Wranglers than Tacomas. The JT doesn't seem to be for people that want a truck, it seems to be for people that want a Wrangler with a bed. I own a Tacoma now and wouldn't trade it for a JT. I personally don't care for it being a convertible. I want a truck to be a truck. It also looks like a long bed but without the extra ft of space. I have a long bed and much prefer the look of the short bed...Ö.I just needed the room.

That being said, I do like the solid axles and max towing of the JT.

OK... Maybe I was too harsh on the JT.... I just watched a couple of videos comparing them to other mid sized trucks and they compare very favorably and for off roading they are easily the most capable if you get the Rubicon version.

I think one of my problems with Jeep Wranglers and the JT is the very limited and small cab space. I feel sandwiched in. I never got that feeling with any of the other mid size trucks.

Also although the Jeep Wranglers and Gladiator I've driven are rated as having comparable horsepower and torque I just can't feel it when driving them. My Wrangler which I've traded off and the new JLU and now Gladiator I drove yesterday simply felt sluggish and like I had to wind the motors way up to get any feeling of power or acceleration.

I have a buddy with a newer Tacoma and it's undeniably powerful and fast and my '15 4runner I just traded also took off like a scalded dog when you asked it to. With Jeeps I'm just not feeling it.

The Toyotas are rated at 270hp and similar torque and if I remember correctly the JLU and JT have similar rated motors but they feel anemic when I drive them. Can someone explain this? I'm confused.

I was seriously considering Tacoma before Wrangler and probably will seriously consider it after Wrangler. I think new buyers considering TRD Pro today will consider JT as well.
However probably you are right JT would take more buyers from JL/JK,RAM1500 than TT.
JT is sort of "late to the party" and it really has to be "reliable" to compete succesfully with TT.

It will be interesting to see how it does. Convertible trucks haven't done too well in the past.

It will never been as good offroad as the Wrangler, and will probably struggle to be a good truck.

And this will always be a Gladiator to me

On this aspect I think it would do well, at list in our JK we like "freedom panels" a lot, we open them every weekend trip and is fun.
Im more concerned about reliability aspects, and of course ESS until they don't make the switch not reseting every engine start I won't buy it.

My mom saw the new gladiator at my local Jeep dealer yesterday. She sent a few pics. After reading this thread I zoomed in on 1 pic that shows the tires....dueler h/t tires. Correct me if I’m wrong but I thought duelers were the stock tires on JK sport S version? While not a super impressive tire, there a lot of Jeeps rolling on those tires.

I'm partial to the older vehicles. I'd like to have any old vehicle body sitting on top of a new drivetrain

If a loaded JT Rubicon ends up costing $60k then it will be competing with the Ford Raptor which is only $71K fully loaded... That's going to be a tough competition. I don't think the JK has a chance against the likes of the Raptor.

Loaded raptors are 70k but a very nicely equipped raptor runs 55-58k . This is in the same price range as an overland jt. I would never put them in the same league. To be honest I wouldn't get a jt over a jl anyday and I think many current Jeep owners wouldn't make the change either. Jt is Not enough truck for the money and not better than the jk or jl to justify a change for most. I remember all these comments about I want it but I don't see many committing to an actual purchase.

These trucks just look off except when modified, lifted and have painted roofs to help hide that ugly back window area. Otherwise they just look really boring and basic. This is the first time I can say I would have to have a painted Jeep roof.

Wow, the JT is so out of proportion, I have no idea how it passed through any design committee. It will need huge tires, a lift and even then....

I'd take a Taco TRD or Chevy Colorado ZR2 over this JT any day.

I think the true calling of the JT is as an Overlanding vehicle. Tent up top, storage drawers in the bed, some aggressive tires, and you are good to go disappear for a while.
You might have to as the bank will be looking for their money. LOL

The Ford Raptor is not a mid-size truck. Wrong market segment. Using this logic I could argue my F250 King Ranch that stickered in the high 60s is competing against the JT, or the Raptor for that matter. Different segment too.

Price is not how market segments are made. Look at the Ranger, Colordao, Tacoma... Build one of them to the hilt, also look at the entry level price. Not too far apart.
