Clamp Style Bikini Headers

Smittybilt or Mastertop? I want to be able to easily remove the top easily on days where I'm not getting Charbroiled, but, be able to "throw it on" in the event of a sudden shower. Are Bikini tops easy to to just stick on in a hurry?

Yes, and no.
Bikini tops are easy to put on, but the drawback is the needed header.

If you don't mind carrying the header around with the top attached, than it would be a yes, simple to put on.

But the header will cut into space, as it is a bar that attaches to the top of the windshield, and is as long as the windshield is wide. So maybe no.

I suppose you could just attach the needed header, and slide the top out of the gruve. Then just roll the bikini up till needed.
Then,,
When needed slide the edge of the top back into the header and finish the sides and roll bar straps.

I've owned both styles of bikini tops that use the clamp (aka no-drill) style and drill-style header. Speed-wise, there's no comparison to how much faster it is to install and remove the type that uses a permanently installed drill-style header. I stopped using my clamp-style header at least ten years ago, it was a PITA and took significantly longer to install/remove.

When using a permanently installed header, which can be left in place whether you have a soft or hard to, the bikini or safari length top just slides into the header from the side. Take 5 seconds. No tools required. Then you just strap the rear of it down. The front edge of this type has a shape that locks in as you slide it into its slot.

The clamp style requires a wrench to tighten and it's not easy to get bolted down properly, neither is the top's front edge easy to get seated in the front edge so it will stay put. The front of this type of top is flat and doesn't lock in like the above style does. Getting the front edge of the top to stay put in the header while strapping it down in the rear was usually a big exercise in frustration.

Having owned and used both styles, I'd only go with the drill-style header that stays in place. It's MUCH faster and mUCH easier than the clamp style is. I first installed the drill-style header into my '97. When I got my '04 and discovered the drill-style header isn't supposed to work, I made it work by just trimming the inside plastic trim piece that covers the windshield frame a tad. I did NOT want to have to start using the no-drill style again.

I actually permanently glued my bikini top to the header for efficiency.
Only takes a couple of minutes to remove or install the top, 2 bolts and a couple of straps.
Oh, and rolled up it easily fits in the back but i did remove rear seat.

had the same conundrum last weekend !!

I ordered a pavement ends Bimini top for $60 bucks and failed to see it needed a header bar
sooooo
I called quadratec on Monday and was going to order besttop clamp style header for $58 bucks
I asked the costumer service guy if he had a better option

he is sending a spider shade $80 bucks
1. no header bar
2. leave it on and put soft top up and down as needed
3. cheaper than buying shade and bar
down side not water proof
but all I want is shade if rains I put the soft top up (Craigslist $100 bucks with hardware last winter, bet he is missing it now),
if I can install top with shade installed its a win -win for me.
BUT I don't have it yet
ill let you know how it goes when I get it fri

I JUST installed my spiderweb shade. I'll likely get rid of the bikini top since I just wanted it for shade and the SW fills that niche. Between the header bar and the straps it really is a PITA. In So Cal there's not enough bad weather to worry about it not being waterproof. I can throw the trail cover in the back if necessary.

just got my spider sun shade, it went on in 15min. looks good, stays tight at 60mph (no flapping and less wind noise) and will do what I need for it to do!!!!

it is my opinion if you lay the shade over the sound bar/roll bar thread the bungee balls up through the under side/bottom of the grommet hole then over the roll bar, hook/loop over ball, this worked well for me when I put the soft top up without removing the shade
very very happy with q-tec and SW !!!!! outstanding warranty 5yrs

I did have a thought,
im going to take it to a local tarp shop on sat. to use as a pattern to see what he would charge me to make a solid one from regular tarp material????? plus he has all sorts of colors!
I have used the spider balls for years on tarps and baseball gloves got them at
Wal-Mart cheap

I really like the new MasterTop brand. Top notch OEM quality and priced better than most other brands out there. It's a great product for the money! In any case, if it's a summer top that we offer I can discount you. For a discounted quote you can go about it 3 ways:

1) PM me with your first & last name, address, zip and the part numbers you would like to order. I'll reply back with a discounted quote if applicable. This takes 1-2 business days (or less) on average depending on PM volume.

2) E-mail my sales rep Rob at: [email protected] Tell him you're a Forum user and would like a discounted quote. He'll get that going for you. He typically responds within hours if it's Mon-Fri 8am-5pm Eastern.

3) Call my sales line at 1-800-745-2348. Tell them you're a Forum user and would like to place an order with your Forum discount. Their hours are Mon-Thurs 8am-Midnight, Friday 8am-9pm, Saturday 9am-5pm.

Whichever you prefer works for us.

Thanks & have a great day!

Well, this is a good discussion. See below for either option discussed from Bestop. They’ve been the OEM supplier for all of the Jeep soft tops since 1987 for a reason: the quality and ease of use is second to none! Hopefully, we can all help you make the right decision! We PM'd you

No thank you,
I got the links you PM'd to me...
I thought you were posting them in the thread.
That's why I asked.
Btw, neither link you sent in the PM went to a discussion about the two types of headers.
Each went to a page on your web site to the safari top.
This thread developed into a discussion between the different types of 'headers' used to attach the tops.
