Rusted purchase REALLY?

Ok I took advantage of the Black Friday sale.
I ordered a Rock Hard Sports cage.
It came well packed, but very rusted. Very poor welds.
Is this usual the way they are shipped? If so this sucks, and I'm not happy and
I'm going to plaster this all over the web.

If not and this is a mistake, please advise.
See photos.

Well its bare metal so some surface rust is going to happen depending on weather and moisture in the air. id just go get it powder coated and not worry too much bout it.

or you can ship them it back and request another one and see what happens with that one.

I'd be upset too. They welds are OK, not great. For what they cost it should have come with an option to have a primer on it.

The welds look strong but not the prettiest and it looks like they did nothing to clean them up. I've seen bare metal fenders and bumpers that look like that after shipping. Yes it stinks and I can imagine the disappointment but I'm not sure it's that unusual.

This few pieces of pipe cost more than the warn m8000 winch I ordered at the same time.
see that post for pictures.
Quality is what I paid for. Not some piece of rusted pipes with poor welds.

I guess you folks on the east coast must be used to paying for rusted pipe.
All they had to do was spray a little oil on it or cheap primer.
I'm Not trying to be rude to you. Let me make that clear.

No thank you. Please keep it bare. My prep to paint or powder coat will remove any rust from the metal.

True, but for some guys a primer option would be nice. Or oil it which would have to be cleaned as part of any good prep job anyway. What about those welds? For that kind of money I'd be just as po'ed as the OP.

Call them first and explain your frustration and see if they'll exchange it. I'm never one to agree with complaining on the forum until you've talked to the seller. If they shaft you after trying to work with the directly, THEN you complain here. The welds looks strong but not pretty. If you want to touch them up you can but once powder coated I doubt you'll even notice.

I agree the welds should have been cleaned up when welded but being a roll bar you can't grind or polish them smooth so your stuck with the look of the welds unless you want to add a little body filler around them to blend them in. Does Rock Hard have an option for tig welded roll cage? I know some companies line Poison Spyder have an option. The tig welded joints will look much better.

Coming from a family that does a lot of welding, my father and uncle can weld just about anything and nicely that's what got me commenting about it. These parts aren't cheap and I would have expected better. I have a few Shipmates who do some amazing welding too. But giving the seller a chance to make it right before coming to the board might have been a better way of dealing with it. OTOH it is nice to see pics of how these things are shipped before buying. For some of us it makes the decision making process easier, others now know what to expect.

I hope they do the right thing for the OP, if they do I'm pretty sure he'll let us know.

I'm with you and the OP. I understand his disappointment. I run a company that has a CNC machine and full fabrication shop. We inspect to verify we meet the minimum requirements the customers spec. Weld quality is one of those things that can make or break a job. Customers remember good quality welds and are quick to point them out.

Exactly. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

I purchased this from 4wd.com. I'm posting on the contact from this web site for 4wd.com. I haven't received a contact from the rep. at 4wd.com yet. I also posted about the warn winch I received from this same order. I also sent a PM to the 4wd.com rep. No answer either way yet.
I'm just really disappointed with the Rock Hard product. I've seen them at off road shows and talked to the owner. They all seem nice. But either this was in stock at 4wd.coms warehouse for quite a while, or a fluke that missed quality control, or Rock hard products arent as great a company as I thought.

Update...
Tom has been very helpful.
I'm returning the Rock Hard sports cage to a retail store only 30 miles away for full credit.
I'm happy with 4wd hardware, but totally disappointed with Rock Hard.
I would be more understanding if it were made in another country. But it is posted on the shipping carton, MADE IN THE USA.
No one should have to pay $650.00 or more in most cases, for rusted and poorly welded steel. I don't care if you live in the rust belt. If the product is represented as quality, it should be delivered in quality shape.
I'm done for now.
