My first time posting here, but I have already learned a lot from reading this forum over the past six years I have owned my Jeep.
I am in a bit of a bind here in Baja. Any advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Here's the situation:
I have a 2003 Wrangler X. I am currently living at the southern tip of Baja. Lots of bad roads around here and my Jeep has taken a beating this whole year. This morning one of the rear coil springs snapped. It broke off right near the top--lost the first coil/loop. The rest is seated pretty well and it handles ok on the road. I went around to auto parts all day and nobody has a coil spring. The Jeep dealership can send one down in a week. I had to take the risk and drive back home, which means an hour drive and a lot of dirt roads. Good news is I made it home and it drove ok along the way. A little wavy in the tail but not bad.
So, here are my options:
1. Order the part and wait a week. But this means I have to drive on this thing as is because I have no other options. I am down here working and live about 1.5 hours from the nearest city.
2. Try to find replacement springs in a junkyard SOMEWHERE. I am wondering if any other springs will work for my 2003? Maybe even some non-Jeep springs? If I look in the junkyard it would be nice if there were at least a couple options. It's slim pickings down here.
3. Wait and just fix the spring when I get back home in about 2 weeks. This does not seem like a good idea to me since it's a 1000 miles of driving to get back to San Diego. Seems like that might be asking for trouble. But wanted to run it by folks here to see what they think.
Any thoughts or suggestions? This situation is not optimum, so I am trying to find a solution that will at least hold out until I get back home. Once I am back in the states this is no problem. Unfortunately certain parts are hard to find here in Baja, so I am in a bit of a bind. Doesn't help that I am living in the boondocks a bit!
Thanks in advance!
