car disappeared

I've lived a sheltered life, so I never thought I'd be starting a thread like this, seeking reactions, thoughts, advice, or anything else:

I've tried to live in "safe" neighborhoods, so I wouldn't have to waste my time with stuff like this, but today my gym car disappeared without a trace.

Or at least almost without a trace. The only possible clue that may or may not have anything to do with what might have happened is there's a broken BMW license plate holder where my gym car used to be parked.

Sorry if this seems mundane, but I'm an old guy who's never had to deal with anything like this before from staying in safe neighborhoods.

Sorry to hear that. Not a lot that you can do, other than wait on the police reports and filing insurance claims, as far as I know. Hope it all works out for you.

Theft sucks.. A few weeks ago, I was careless and left an expensive item on the seat of my Jeep. I ran in to a store just for a second and forgot to lock the door.. Came back a minute later and found that the jackals had struck and were long gone with my property. You get a real sick feeling in the stomach..

I'm curious too... what's a 'gym car'.

It was recovered semi stripped and pretty banged up. It wasn't having it gone that bugged me, its about a MoFo who helps himself to somebody else's possessions. Hopefully insurance settles fairly or it comes back in perfect condition to you. Best of luck either way.

You are probably just a random statistic. If this is your first car stolen, consider yourself lucky. Along time ago my home was broken into it and it’s a very f’up feeling. I’ve also had a restored Camaro stolen. A friend had an old Dodge van stolen and he only left it for one hour. Police recovered it a few weeks later and apparently meth heads were using it as a party vehicle.

Hopefully your insurance will set it right for you.

1st and 2nd cars I owned were never broken into. But the 3rd was broken into twice in a week and a half and stolen 1 time (Toyota longbed 4x4). The time it was stolen I was in a business for a short sales meeting for no more than 45 minutes. I came out and spoke with a sales associate for a few minutes then turned towards the corner I parked on. Uh oh! NO TRUCK! I looked down the street in case the emergency brake failed and it came out of gear and rolled back. I looked for signs labeled no parking thinking maybe it was towed. It was stolen. All interior loose items were stolen then it was parked in a shopping mall parking lot a few miles away.

Another car with a convertible top was cut into even though the doors were unlocked. I Ford Exploder was broken into when I left a gym bag visible in the back seat. Crash and grab. They took the bag and ran. They were caught later but had dumped the bag and it was never to be found. At the time I had a second set of keys for the car and house in the center console along with my wallet. If the thieves had taken a little more time they would have had a complete vehicle, money, credit cards etc.

Today I try to keep anything in the vehicle on the floor and not in the seats and with tinted glass in the rear things are less visible.

Most break ins are when something that looks like it could have valuables is visible. Keep things out of sight and you'll reduce the chance of having your vehicle broken into.

Sorry your privacy was violated

Sorry this happened though.
I have never had to experience this, but lived on a dead end road as a kid and saw the result. Soooo many stolen cars abandoned down there. Crazy.

After 30 years in le the only defense is good insurance. That and don't leave anything of value or your keys in the vehicle. Lost count of how many times I have had people tell me they hid their wallet or purse or gun under the seat or floor mats lol. You think thieves don't do the same thing.

If you want to have fun take a dump in a bag and wrap it like a birthday present and leave it in your unlocked car. Make sure nothing of value is in the car tho.

Thanks everyone! It is theft, but not the kind you were expecting:

https://www.trentonian.com/opinion/c...1dd1be43f.html

Towing fee : $285
Storage fee : $361
Jump fee (because they jimmied the door to turn on the lights) : $85
Debris removal fee (because they damaged the front end on the flatbed) : $55

The gym has great equipment, so I get a great workout, but I don't want slide into a newer vehicle right after that

I'm normally pretty diligent about renewals, but this time the gym car's renewal got lost in the mail. In the last 20 years, I've only lost about 3 things in the mail that I'm aware of.

By the way, they're not required to tow - it's completely discretionary

When they tow a car that's well-maintained, it's because they're getting pay-offs from the tow operator

Ha!!! shame on you. Well at least you didnt do it on purpose Id suspect. There was a few places in Ca where they would impound your car for little to nothing violations. The local Gov jerks had a deal worked out with the local tow company for some side cash. Scumbags.

So your vehicle was towed for having an expired registration??? It's not that clear in your original post.

I'm still not sure what a gym car is.

Correct, not on purpose. We have the same situation here, with the deal worked out for side cash.

Via the courts, the person who selected this tow operator can be identified. Using the court's subpoena power, the pay-offs can be identified.

They thought they were clever to acquire the police. But the courts offer enough avenues of discovery to link the pay-offs to the officials.

I think this calls for a RICO lawsuit. It's time to shine some light on the people who are connected with local gov. Discovery in that RICO action will yield the collateral info needed to bring justice to the local gov.

Agreed, it's like there's something in the water here. Only in NJ would people tolerate this captain's log, instead of picking up a shovel to clean out the barn.

Agreed, the google reviews on this tow operator describe how thoroughly everything in their vehicles were searched.

I hear ya about the ONLY time - my car in question has had a run of bad luck, where the FIRST time I ever parked it on the street someone dented it and drove off. Stuff keeps happening to it when it's parked on the street.

I would ask where do you live, but it doesn't seem to matter much these days. when I take my convertible out, I don't carry anything of value in it, and don't lock the doors.
it's cheaper to replace whatever is stolen than to replace the top that some scumbag cut to get in.
Never had a problem when I left my Doberman in the Jeep when I had to go into the store...…..….

It’s a car that doesn’t run and you push it around to get a workout.

Apparently that's what the tow azzhats did - they f'd it up pretty bad, and falsely claimed it came in that way - it will take longer than a year for the RICO claims to come to trial, but certainly worth the wait

I've never had a car towed but I've always wondered: how do they contact you? Do you get a letter saying who to call or where to go, or do they just wait for you to report the car stolen?

Sorry to hear of your troubles. There was an article in Car and Driver a few months ago about the police impound racket in Chicago. (To an extent it applies everywhere, but there was especially egregious.) It was quite enlightening.
