Wrangler unlimited stalls while driving

Hi, my 2013 Wrangler Unlimited has recently started to stall while driving. It happens randomly, once every few weeks- the latest was a couple days ago. It starts again and after sitting about 5-10 minutes and seems to drive fine otherwise. No lights go off, it just dies and I loose power steering. This has happened in lower gears as well as higher. The dealership states they have never heard of this problem and advised me that they would not be able to do much since no dash lights go off. Has any body else had this happen??

Battery terminals are tight? In good condition (no corrosion)? Does it happen after bumps?

Hard to imagine that it happens and no warning lights illuminate. Maybe get yourself a code reader and see if it's throwing any error codes?

Yup, no dash lights go off, no sound, it just dies! The lights, air, radio all still working though. After I let it sit awhile it has so far started and driven ok. I tried a code reader- no messages. I will be dropping it off at the dealer later this week.

Not that MOPAR would get involved with my 30 year old heap, but with Kori paying attention to this thread and making the offer, it makes me glad to be part of this forum and not as reticent about considering a JK or JKU (or whatever the next model designation may be) as I might be otherwise.

I am having the same exact problem with my 2013 JKU as well. My Jeep is not throwing out any error codes at all. Did you ever figure out what was wrong with it? My mechanic has no clue and I am at a loss. Mine started about 2 months ago and I have approx. 52,000 miles on my jeep.

Try the crank position sensor - about $15 from the dealer and easy to replace. Don't buy a cheap aftermarket sensor.
My 13 JKU stalled on highway and in town without throwing any related codes. Would also cut out intermittently without completely stalling causing the vehicle to feel like a cylinder was missing or the transmission was slipping. New crank sensor fixed my issue.

Crank position sensor

So far so great! I was having hesitation when down shifting, lack of power, and dies once in a while while driving.

I replaced the Crankshaft position sensor (17$ with tax in PA). Easy swap, took 10 minutes. Now she runs better than ever. shifting is smooth and precise. So far so great!

The dealer can't check it out till Jan 3rd, but in the mean time I filed a complaint with the NHTSA as a safety issue

Looks like mine is needing a cylinder head and crankshaft position sensor. Will keep everyone updated

I have encountered the same problem a few weeks ago.

The car: 2012 Jeep Unlimited Sahara, non-modified.
The problem: random lack of power, engine stalls frequently.
The details: Issues started at ca. 75k miles suddenly experiencing temporary lack of power which also feels like transmission (automatic) is not shifting. It got worse when engine stalled. Although I really love everything about the Jeep, I am aware that the engine, 3.6 liter so-called Pentastar, is certainly one of the weak components in this automobile. However, until this serious engine issue is resolved the Jeep is off duty.
At first all this happened occasionally, now more often and the engine stalls frequently when driving. No warning lights, no other technical issues. We faced a horrible dangerous situation in traffic and were lucky no harm or damage occurred.

After having searched the internet, I summarize as follows:

1. This is a apparently a common Jeep problem, and most likely anyone might encounter this at one point in time.
2. Jeep dealers do not have the knowledge and expertise to resolve the issue nor able to advice the customer what to do.
3. There seems no recall in place nor does Jeep acknowledge any engineering or manufacturing error.
4. This is a very dangerous problem that makes the Jeep a safety issue. It is not safe to drive at all, not for yourself and not for others.
5. The replacement of a crankshaft sensor is often mentioned as a way to fix it.
6. It is unclear if the root cause has been found and a fix is confirmed as a resolution to this problem.

I cannot believe that Jeep would sit on this known problem, while a fatal accident is just a matter of time.

How to proceed? I will ask for the sensor replacement to take immediate action.

Have the dealer do a leak down test to see if you have a failed cylinder head

I am happy to report that the symptoms are gone!

After having replaced the crankshaft sensor ten days ago, the Jeep drives as usual. No more hick-ups when driving and engine has not stalled since then.
Everything with the Jeep was in order and only the sensor was replaced with a new part in a professional shop.
This should be further evidence that the Jeep leaves the factory with a poorly engineered or badly manufactured product. Let's see how long the new one will last.

Thanks to all enthusiasts who shared their experience, I was able to immediately address the issue, and avoid costly and random dealership investigations.

its not that its badly engineered, its that the bean counters at FCA like to cheap out on key components and tech's that don't know how to troubleshoot without a check engine code and rush jobs so that the dealers can make max profit....

After replacing the cylinder head and crankshaft position sensor, all seems good. Although a minor annoyance was they spilled coolant while removing the head and didn't clean up so need to go to the car wash and clean it myself

Unhappy unexplained stalling 2016 rubicon, loaded

It will die (shuts off) as soon as I put into drive or reverse after starting it regardless of warmed up or cold.

Coming onto the highway with speeds of traffic coming at me at 60-70 mph, I was entering the on ramp and it just went poot! almost got killed.

so strange. only 16,000 miles on it, hopefully they (Jeep dealership) can figure it.

So far they have had it about a week and cannot seem to simulate the problem.

No offense but...Given there are so many JK's out there that are *not* experiencing the issue, exactly how long should this $15 sensor last before it is considered not "poorly engineered" by your standards? Jeeps are fun, but imperfect vehicles...just like every other type of vehicle. Stuff breaks and wears out...everyone drives theirs in a different way. I'd be thankful it was such a simple and inexpensive fix.

Update, it seems the crank shaft sensor was the problem for my jeep. No more stalling since it was replaced, the jeep dealer would never commit to what the problem was though. New problem is ABS light and traction control light now on.

Engine stalling intermittently

I have also had this issue of the engine stalling while stopped and in motion with my Jeep Wrangler Unlimited- Sahara 2015 (46k miles). I just bought it in May 2018 and it started happening in June. The issue is getting worse and happening more frequently. Nothing indicates that engine is about to stop and all lights/air stay on. Have also felt it lurch/misfire occasionally while driving. I have taken the car back to the Jeep dealer where I bought it 3 times and they haven't been able to detect the problem. It is currently at the dealership, so I will call on Monday and tell them to replace the crank shaft position sensor and check out the cylinder heads. Thank you all for the helpful comments in this thread! Anyone had success with reporting this issue to Jeep as a safety recall?

I have a 2014 wrangler unlimited experiencing this issue completely randomly. Sometime when driving down highway, sometime when gearing from D to R. The Jeep dealership cannot repkicate this issue and am getting extremely frustrated, as it is now becoming a safety issue when driving. Any outcomes from this thread? Thanks in advance.
