130 Uconnect w connectivity USB questions

The Willy's will be here in around the 18th so I've got time to get some music together on a USB drive and I have a few questions.

I see that it will only read MP3 or WMA files and I'm OK with that. I'd like Wave or better yet FLAC but in a vehicle with a soft top I'm not going to complain.

I will be using the USB port to play from files stored on a USB drive. NO iPhone, iPad or other player. How are you organizing you files? Does it need to be all one big file or can I have folders for Artist, Album, etc?

Once it plays all of the content of a folder will it automatically move to the next or replay the same folder?

I've read some old posts that say random play works and others that say it doesn't. On a 130 is there a random play?

Thanks,
Will

First off, I have the 430N so maybe all my info is moot, but, when I played music off the stick with it inserted into the center console port it lumped all the music together regardless of folder structure. It used the MP3 ID data to allow you to select by album, artist, genre, etc. I was able to get the 430N to read playlists but they were a hassle to manage. Plus, the center console USB would suddenly stop working at times.

Not that the 130 has it but I switched to plugging the stick into the head unit and it is way better. It recognizes the stick's file structure and uses the file names instead of dealing with the ID data. No glitches either.

Seems odd to me that having the USB device plugged into one port would allow the radio to read it differently than another port.

In the radios with 2 ports is one supposed to be the primary?

I could never get my 2014 130s to work the way I wanted , tried to put it on the usb stick several ways in mp3 wav wma-lossless formatted in fat32 nothing made it work like my pioneer unit which was much easier to use and played playlist, albums, artist as it should.
the console usb would play all the songs from all the albums in alphabetical order, all the A's Then B's ect.
then I put it all on a I-touch and just kept it plugged in inside the console work almost as good as the pioneer does.

Is there no way to change from alphabetical order? Can you at least choose a folder (album) and let it play that.

The 130 radio plays USB music according to the following:
1. If you select a song, either manually or with voice commands, it will play that song and then all the remaining songs in alphabetical order. After the last song it will start over at the beginning.
2. If you select a playlist it will play all the songs in playlist order and then repeat the playlist.
2. If you select an artist it will play that artist's songs in alphabetical order and then repeat.
3. If you select an album it will play that album from the beginning and then repeat.
4. If you select a genre it will play all the songs in that genre in alphabetical order and then repeat.

I've used both MP3 and iTunes default M4A and M4P formats and MP3 seems more reliable. Be aware that when you insert the USB device it can take several minutes to read and index everything and until that process completes you will not see any information when you select the playlist, artist, album and genre buttons.

Even after it's been indexed, it takes a few minutes every time you start the Jeep before it's ready. Until it is ready it will revert to AM/FM automatically.

akc1955 thanks,

That sucks! I may have to put in some sort of player. I didn't want to but I might have to.

OK the more I think about it the less I dislike it.

It plays things as if they were a CD. Start to finish then repeat. I would like it more if it had a random play option within each folder as well as a random of the total number of songs on the drive but I can live with it simply storing CD's and allowing me to select them to play.

I used dbpower amp (free trail version) to encode my music from my music folder both have itunes and cd's to 192 bit rate; on dbpower amp option i used "normalize" volume as some of my music would either be loud or too quiet (I use 'random' on my play option) I had to remove the numbers found in front of the track 01 - "track name" ETC for all my music as i found the shuffle tended to pick same track number different artist; i didnt get it right the first time; so had to re encode all the songs i wanted to listen to and remove the track number; Im using a mini usb kingston 4 gb, although i have a mini 64gb usb drive i just dont have the patience to remove all the track numbers so i went with a smaller thumb drive suitable for 538 songs. Im one of those people who likes having the album art on the screen but for some reason they dont always show up; anyway its the music i wanted in the end not how the album art looks on my nav screen. I have a couple ipods i could use with the line in option but it would mean i would use a usb charger via the cigarette input and line in hanging outside the nav unit; i dont want prying eyes seeing i have something of value hiding in my glove box; the mini usb was dirt cheap (black friday purchase) so i went with that instead.

It supports random play. Just press the random button on the radio to toggle between random and sequential play. Or you can say "random on" or "random off" using voice commands. Random works for playlists, artists, albums, genres and the entire song catalog.

Really! I've been hearing that it didn't do that. That's what I'd like it to do.

As stated above random works great on the 130 and a USB drive. I use it all the time.

Also if you have an older ipod it works pretty good via voice commands. "Play artist Rolling Stones" and such. I bring my old classic ipod on long drives, just keep a couple USB drives around for commuting on random.
