2008 Wrangler key question--buying new key/programming

I have a 2008 4-door wrangler. I recently dropped one of my keys. The key still works in the ignition (engine starts) but the alarm buttons don't work. So every time I go into the Jeep after my wife has locked it up with her key, the alarm goes off if I try to enter it with just the key.

So, a few questions.

1. Because the car starts, the key is still programmed right? That means all I need to do is get a new key cut and I can still program it myself as I have two "valid" keys. Is that a correct assumption?

2. Where is the best place to buy a replacement key. I've seen some on ebay for about $25 and some on other sites for over a $100. Obviously, I don't want to spend a ton, but I don't want to buy a key that will malfunction within the year.

Thanks

Have you tried replacing the battery? Crack it open first. You might have shifted something that is preventing the battery from making proper contact, or maybe a fresh battery will be a fix.

I don't know the answers to your other questions, but I'd invest a few minutes and $'s into a battery before looking to replace the entire fob.

Tried a new battery....no luck. When I opened it up, a piece (a chip perhaps) that was attached to the board fell out. No way to solder it back on.

This won't directly answer your question but is worth mentioning.

The $8 button-less keys on ebay will work exactly as your "broken" key. Yes your broken key is still valid and will start your Jeep. The inexpensive ebay keys will do the same (and yes your alarm will go off if locked). The alarm quits as soon as you put the cheapo key in the ignition.

I've programmed 15 or 20 of these. I only buy and keep these as backups and they exhibit the same behavior.

so the ones you've bought off ebay didn't have the ability to unlock and unlock the car remotely...or did those buttons not work when you tried to program the key?

$8 ea. No Buttons. They'll manually unlock and start the jeep. They are backup keys in case you lose one (then it's off to the dealer). I always make 2 or 3 per vehicle. They can be used to program additional keys.

Let use know how your buttoned keys work out. (and where you end up getting them from).

I got some for my 08 from 'iKey' or some such on line, about $28 for 3 with the gray head & no alarm buttos, then had them cut locally.

Best deal I could find.

Good place for inexpensive transponder keys for all Wranglers from 2007 through 2014. Made in USA.

I'm experiencing this exact situation. I purchased one from Ikeys online and one from the dealer. Both exhibit the same response. Both will unlock the doors and start the engine BUT the alarm goes off each time I manually unlock the door. Frustrating. Is this just the way it is or is there a trick to get them to work fully? The dealer said fhere was some sort of unlock pattern that allows the key to work. He even got it to work, until I drove it home and it reset. Something to do with a pattern of locking and unlocking with the key before opening the door. Anyone have any clue?
