2012 JK. Needs a new rear end.

Just got word from mechanic that i need new rear end. Not sure of the details or pricetag. Was running but brought it in after rear axle seals were replaced and they noticed metal present.
Does anyone have advice as far as if I am looking at fixing/ replacing to go with a different set up? I do tow a lot. Box trailer for work and a sxs 2 or more times a month over the mountain parkway with about a 2500lb load.
Any advise would be welcome.
Thanks

That sux. Sorry....By new rear, I'm guessing you have damage to the ring and pinion? Any pics or lessons for the community? It depends a bit but it might be worth upgrading since you destroyed the rear relatively quickly. Any indication of why /what happened? Consider regearing now if you've ever considered it or will in the future. Recommend using quality gears and getting cryo treated and chromoly shafts with larger diameter and spline count in your upgrade. Good luck.

If its still driving then change the differential oil and keep on running as long as it's not whining it should be normal wear and tear.

If it is whining then get ready to replace ring and pinion as well as bearings and seals again.

Lots of shops will scare you into maintenance you don't need. Be careful and get another opinion.

I agree with this, especially since axle seals seem to be a fairly common problem. My 2013 had the passenger side rear fail at under 5,000 miles. If you search the topic, you'll find quite a few similar situations.

Agreed.

Also - wouldn't this be a warranty item under the 5yr/100k miles power train warranty. - unless you did something to damage them, shouldn't be an expected repair.

I'd be amazed if this isn't under warranty. If you do however, start looking in the direction of a new rear end, I'd highly recommend someone like CompleteOffroad
