2014 JK Sport sub issues. Help!

I have a 2014 4 door sport. I don't know squat about stereos or subs. I had the crappy stock radio so I bought the RES version on ebay. Not much better. Anyway, originally my jeep didn't have a sub. I bought a stock sub from a friend. The wiring was in place so we hooked it up. We can't get any sound from the sub even with the new stock head. The dealership said I need an amp to run the sub. After reading other posts, some suggest I need to tap into the front speakers. Any suggestions? Thanks

assuming you did not have a factory subwoofer from the start, the dealer is correct... you need an amplifier. if you just wire the subwoofer into the stock front wiring.. 2 things could happen.

1 you are going to drop or raise the resistance on the stock head unit (depending on how it is wired in) which can lead to failure of the stock radio's internal power unit if it is not able to handle a 2 or 8 ohm load resistance.

or

2 assuming it actually works without causing a premature failure, (which may not happen for quite a while, if at all) you will get full range sound (vocals and all) at a level marginally different than the rest of the speakers in the system without adding some sort of crossover to allow just bass frequencies through.

the woofer you are adding wants more power than the stock radio can deliver. enter the amplifier. the stock amplifier that comes in the "premium audio" equipped jeeps amplifies all of the speakers and the woofer in the rear. it also has an internal crossover to only allow bass frequencies to be delivered to the subwoofer.

instead of going the factory amplifier route which would require more changes than just adding the amplifier... you could find a small low powered mono or 2 channel amplifier with a built in low pass crossover and have that installed to run just the rear woofer. i am unsure of the factory woofers ohm specs i just remember it being a dual voice coil design and i am also not able to provide the factory amplifiers power output to the factory woofer.

good luck... hopefully some others will chime in and help you out with some options.
