arb locker question

I have an 07 Sahara JKU with an ARB air locker in my D44. The last couple time I was wheeling I heard a clicking noise when I engage the locker. It almost sounded like the gear was slipping. I opened up the differential expecting to find metal and possibly a busted gear. It looks pretty clean, no metal shavings and very little look of any metal sheen to the oil. All the gears that I can see look good. The best I can tell the carrier bearings look good. If I look into the openings in the locker, the gears look normal. The pinion gear looks good. I can't see anything out of sorts.
My question is there any reason I can't engage the locker with the cover off and see if it seems to be engaging? I half wonder if my compressor isn't putting enough air in to engage properly. Is this possible and how could I test? Anything ideas or things I can check?

Check your air pressure, Not sure what setup you have so I cant tell you exactly how to do that. I have a standard air compressor pressure gauge on my manifold. as long as you have 60+ you are good there.

It takes a lot to damage the clutch gear. I dont know much about the D44 ARB internals, but I bought my 14 bolt ARB with a stripped clutch gear that clicked like you say. It was behind a 700+hp 454 on nitrous turning 46" tires.

and yea, you can activate it with the cover off all you want

Thanks for the response. I have the single ARB compressor mounted under my seat. It has a connector to hook a hose for aring up. I just wonder how much my pressure is going into the dif. With a lousy 3.8 engine with 37's I question whether I have enough torque to damage the clutch but I know very little about lockers

Sounds like a broken clutch gear. The new style ARBs are nearly bomb proof, but the clutch gear can let go especially if there is not enough preload on the case and/or loose ring gear bolts.

Poly performance carries all the internal parts. Think I paid $80 when I bought my clutch gear. Not bad considering I paid $450 for the locker!

I had someone suggest it's actually not the lockers at all and is the cv joint on the driveline. This makes so much more sense and adds up to all the symptoms I've been experiencing.

If the sound only happens when the locker is engaged, I would suspect the locker. Can you tell if the locker is locking up or slipping?

That failure is a million times more likely, hope that's it!

I had my lockers checked out since I had my differential torn apart. No broken gears and locker clutch was good. I took jeep into the dealer to have cv joints checked since they were technically under warranty. They can't duplicate the noise so won't back it up. They suggest replacing driveline with aftermarket. Haha no sh$&....
