Are there bumper spacers between plastic bumper and frame?

Took my bumper off today (15 minute task on the tube; all afternoon in my driveway) to install some Xprite amber fogs and a flat metal plate, about 2"X4" clanged to the ground. One side only. Do I need it? I put the bumper back on with a couple of loose nuts and will finish up tomorrow. Also where do y'all get those cool exploded diagrams? I may not bug y'all so much if I could look at those. Thanks in advance!

I took my front bumper off without removing the tow hooks. Spacers fell out of mine as well. After much cursing, I reinstalled them between the end of the frame and my LOD bumper.

I put the spacer that fell off when I removed the bumper ass. on the bolts and reinstalled it but the bumper was crooked. Took it off again, removed the metal plate, put the bumper back on and it is straight, tight and seems good to go. Dealer parts diagram and mopargiant diagrams didn't show any plates either. I guess it is just mystery metal.
Maybe this is how they reproduce; one piece at a time. Thanks for all inputs.

it is funny none of the illustrations show them but I have done a bunch of front bumper replacements and they all have these spacers.

They are not spacers. They go between the nuts and the frame flanges.

^^^It's important to note that these 4 'spacers' are not really spacers at all. They do not go between the bumper and the frame. They go on the studs directly under the nuts when the bumper is installed. They act as reinforcing plates to spread out the load from the tow hooks (or bumper-mounted winch).

If for some reason the bumper needs to be spaced away from the body, keep these plates in their stock location and make simple spacer plates.

edit: looks like 15anvil was quicker at typing than me.

When I went to the Rough Country hybrid stubby winch mount/bumper, I replaced these reinforcements with ones I made with smaller holes to get even better stiffening of the frame flanges. Close inspection will show you that you can make wider reinforcements with better fitting holes if you are the type that worries a lot.

Just watch what material you use. From the lack of marks in the factory reinforcements where the nuts contact them (at least that's what I noticed), they may be a slightly harder/stronger material than typical low carbon steel.

They don't seem to be anything special. I also went to .25" thick as the stock ones are only .18" thick. Of course, the frame flanges aren't real thick either. The frame relies on its boxed shape for much of its strength. My intention was to sandwich the flanges between the strong Rough Country bumper and strong frame reinforcements, to the extent possible. I also used 1/2 inch grade 9 bolts, washers, and nuts.

Thanks for the details. Ill try swapping mine to the inside when I install the frame tie-ins.

That makes perfect sense! I've got one so I'll find something suitable on the other bolts. Who knows what happened to the others. Previous owner(s) must have done away with them. Used vehicles, right? Thanks much!
