black mat inside hood - can i throw it away?

theres a black mat on the inside of my hood. its made from probably the worst, cheapest material known to man: it collects dirt and mud and feels nasty to touch. can i just throw it away?

Yes, why not? Mine is a 14 and never came with one. If you're worried about heat possibly messing up the hood, get the Poison Spyder hood louver 👍

I have a 2014 and drove it with for 6 months with it then at a performance shop the guy says "What you still have that?" he then pulls it out and threw it away. I think its an improvement.

i had no idea what its for, so head dissipation wasn't even on my mind. it can't be for that because that thing collects dirt so fast it probably loses all such properties within the first 50 miles or so... i was driving the other day, went into a very small puddle (like the one kids jump in) and it looks like i drove through a swamp and brought some home with me :|

Rubicons and Saharas have them Sports don't. It is more for sound deadening then anything. I have had mine in for over 25000 miles on my 14 rubi and it still looks good. I have been off road a lot so strange you are getting so much splash up there.

I don't have the mat since I got a stripped sport.

If I had the mat it'd be filthy since this is all too common.

My 2013 Freedom Edition JKU did not come with the hood insulation. So, yes, you can toss it in the trash.

Do you need it? No. Does it help with road noise? Maybe and if you were really concerned about that, remember you bought a JEEP.

That said, mine is still there on the 13 JKUR and gets washed now and then when I hose off the motor. No problem. This is not something I will spend my time worring over.

Yes you can throw it away....but you paid for it.

If you don't want it, remove it, rinse it off, put it on CL as a trade for a 12 pack of good beer.

Funny someone brought this up. Its suppost to be a engine noise suppressor. I think its made out of some kind of Fiber Glass. I just noticed on my hood that it's like Sand Paper and wears the paint off. I put Electrical Tape on areas where its doing the damage. And now that i think of it, I dont remember my Isuzu Rodeo having one.

I don't have the mat either. The nice thing is that it melts the snow on the hood quicker than without it. I leave 1" of snow on my hood when clearing it off so I don't scratch it and it melts very fast

Mmm...I didn't know Sports don't have it.

Well, there's the other half of the $4,000 difference between a Sport and a Sahara everyone was wondering about! Mystery solved.

Next!

the insulation on the underside of the hood in most vehicles is a type of fire suppression blanket. The little snaps melt and the matt falls on the motor to help calm the fire in the case of an engine fire.

It may trap a mud and debris but it also traps a lot of noise. Some liners are used for fire suppression particularly for engines that run hot in tight spaces. The 3.8/3.6 engines don't fit that mold and if it was a safety feature it would be included on every Sport.

This is an Urban Legend. It's strictly for sound suppression. It's not even for heat suppression. It will not suppress a fire. Maybe that might apply to some vehicle made somewhere, but not a Wrangler.

I removed mine back in 07. It just traps dirt and mud.

Dont throw it away. Its a noise suppressor. On long road trips you will start hearing alternators bearing whine, loud air intake and and noisy water pumps.

I knew there was a good reason I kept mine sitting in a back corner of the garage... I pulled it out this spring. Had it in all last year and through the winter, finally got tired of it and just pulled it out. Didn't think of trading it for beer though!

OP- want a nice new(ish) hood mat thing? I like good beer!

If you are ever in middle Tennessee, I would gladly trade a 12 pack for a nice clean mat.
