Question Consequences with Disconnected Battery??

Hi All-


I would like to disconnect the battery to do some work on the 2014 Sahara. I want to remove seats (cleaning and seat cover installation) as well as add a toggle switch to the wiring under the center console (ESP Kill Switch).


As simple as it sounds I have seen people post things such as very dangerous because seat airbags maybe triggered. I believe my '14 JKU has bags in the steering wheel and passenger side dash because of the little imbossed logo's there & no tags or indication of bags on the seats, also the build sheet does not specifically state seat airbags.


Others say it can only be disconnected for a specified amount of time, maybe 15 min, then the Dealer Service will have to fix the Uconnect Radio and other computer electronics may default.


Some have said the Dealer also has to change the batteries, etc., etc.


Does anyone have any experience with disconnecting the battery?? Very sad if a person cannot even replace a battery these days without all the special tools and computer resets etc. that appears to be the case-


Do I dare disconnect the battery for ~ 1/2 an hour without having to tow it into a Dealer?

You'll be alright. I've disconnected a battery for an entire day while working on the jeep.

It says in the owner's manual to disconnect the negative cable if leaving the jeep unused for more than 21 days.

To prevent dead battery...all vehicles has a small parasitic draw. 3 wks is pretty standard timeframe to pull a battery terminal.

The only consequence of disconnecting a battery that I know of, is that it will reset the emissions monitors.....

After disconnecting the battery, you will have to go through several different "drive cycles" before all your emissions monitors will show "ready" and allow you to pass a SMOG inspection.

If you need to get a SMOG inspection that checks the readiness of the emissions monitors (like in SoCal) in the near future... I'd wait on disconnecting the battery...

I know my Ram diesel truck took forever to reset all the emissions monitors, one time it took over a month and 700+ miles!

I'm not sure how long it takes a Jeep to show ready after disconnecting the battery...

No need to worry about the smog monitors. They reset by themselves as you drive. Won’t set a cel. If there is ever an issue you can look up the drive cycle. Do what it says and usually that will reset the monitor.

Same. Just reconnected it two hours ago and it was disconnected since Friday morning. No problem.

Unhooked mine several time when wiring lights, winches, etc and it was off for a few days without any issues. Just need to reset the radio presets and such but nothing to be concerned with.

For what it's worth.. You can buy 'computer memory keepers' that will supply a voltage to the PCM/ECM, radio and other car systems that might have volatile memories.

They're basically a battery that you plug into the 12V power port on the dash. They keep a voltage present when the vehicle battery is disconnected. Here's a real cheapie --> https://www.amazon.com/Powerbuilt-64...gateway&sr=8-2

Thanks for all the replies-

So, in summary, with a disconnected battery I should not have to worry about removing front seats and air bags going off although I don't have seat airbags. I'm sure my bags are in the dash, both sides as mentioned in 1st post.

I don't mind resetting channels on the radio, but, I had read elsewhere that battery disconnect would totally screw up my UCONNECT RADIO & have to bring into dealer for rebooting or reset whatever. When I bought the '14 Jeep (Jan 2019, with 17K miles) the original UConnect radio was totally trashed & they replaced with a new (same) before I bought it. That's why I'm so concerned-

With my 2012 unlimited sport, I recently took my seat out to install an amp underneath and when I reinstalled I had not problems with air bag stuff. I read, after I removed seat, that the airbag system would be messed up but found that was not true for mine when I reinstalled.

One thing I did find that seems crazy is that when I reconnected the battery my radio would not work because I needed the security code. This proved to be a pain because my dealer said they are being told to no longer give out the codes. I ended up finding a dealer who provided code but I first had to remove dash and get radio serial number and then show up in person with serial number and proof of ID. If possible, try to find your security code that might be in your manual, docuementation, etc. I'm assuming this is still necessary for newer jeeps like yours?

It will be fine. After disconnecting, make sure you touch the positive and negative cables together to discharge and current still left in the system just as a precaution.

Thanks for chiming in here zr8000. This is exactly the problem that I've heard about and dread the thought of dealing with. I had a new Connect radio installed (no charge) when I bought the Jeep this past January because it did not work. This took the dealer about a week to do. They could not get the code themselves & days down the road they decided to put a new one in. They said something about the code only available to the dealer etc.

So another ploy to make you bring the vehicle into the shop if the battery is disconnected.

Most who have replied here have not stated the year and model of there Jeeps so I still am worried that this is an issue, especially after the dealer could not get the old code for the original radio that came in my Jeep.

Makes it a real pain to decide if I dare bull the terminals knowing It can be so costly....

ZEN357, thanks for your reply. I'm wondering if your reply was made considering the reply made by zr8000, just before yours? I also have to wonder, in regard to jwt873's post about "computer memory keepers". I would think jwt873's recommendation would be the best precaution- keeping the radio powered, so it wouldn't require the hassle with codes and removal of the radio to restart it, & Dealer expense.

ZEN357, curious what year your wrangler is?

I've also read that you can't replace an old battery because a new replacement has to be entered into the Jeeps computer system, again having to be served by a dealership.

I'm afraid this thread is not going to help anyone since most replies are a mix from others experience with different years and possible models. I guess we'll never know because the Dealer or Jeep simply wouldn't want this kind of information to get out thus curbing the Dealers dependance....ulling hair:

I replaced the battery in our 2013 Sahara without any adverse effects afterwards from having the battery disconnected.

When I replaced my 430rbz I disconnected the battery and removed the unit. Then I realized there was still a cd in the tray, so I reconnected and powered on to eject. It wanted a security code.



If I cared more about the disc in there I'd probably ask the dealer for it. But it got me to thinking if it wanted the code because I disconnected the neg from the battery, or because I disconnected and reconnected the wiring on the head unit.


The 430rbz is currently sitting in my garage with Audioslave - Out of Exile still stuck in the tray.

18JK disconnected the battery for 1 hour or so - no side effects, even the favorite stations where there.
Security code will be triggered only when the unit is removed from the vehicle.
I had to reset the clock though.

Well it turns out that I too did not need the security code. While doing the genesis dual battery install, I inadvertently dislodged one of the many large connectors under the fuse box, and this was the cause of my issues. Since all the dash lights were working I did not realize this until a call to Shane at Genesis. That guy is super cool and knows his stuff, he led me right to the problem, shout out to the man himself.
Weird when that connector was back connected, even my station presets were still intact, no code needed to get the radio to work. Technology and the magic, voodoo stuff eh.
