Diagnose Leak Help--Pix Included!

I have a 2015 2.5 AEV lifted JKU with 40K. I was looking underneath and noticed what looks like a leak. I tried cleaning it but I guess I need some brake cleaner.

1. Anybody seen similiar issue?

2. Could I bring this in for warranty work under the powertrain warranty?

Thanks!

Mark

I wish someone could explain this.

We have 2 2015s that have this. Those rubber plugs cover inspection ports. For almost 4 years both of our JKUs have had that exact issue on the same side as you - around the passenger side rubber plug.

Above that port is where the engine and transmission meet. The only fluids near that area are transmission fluid and oil. Many people who see a leak there see oil from the rear main seal, which sits above those holes on the back of the engine.

Other people have found oil there from a leaking oil cooler housing. This drips down from the top of the engine and around the transmission housing.

For us, we cannot find a leak. At all. Everything is fine, but this "grease" just seems to collect there. I have had several mechanics look at ours and find nothing. We have also had no fluid loss. But this area is always wet for us. It's one of the two JK mysteries that drives me crazy.

I'd have a mechanic add dye to your oil, and after driving it for a while have them check the oil cooler, rear main seal, and anywhere else they can think of. You might get lucky.

No idea if this is covered by powertrain warranty - I guess that depends on what they find (if they find anything). You will probably be charged to diagnose the issue regardless.

if that is all you have after 40,000 miles that is not really a leak or even a seep. I have had 4 jk's with 3.6's and they all have had a little discoloration at the flywheel like that.

Hey tankrubi,

To determine if there's an issue that would fall under your Powertrain warranty, a certified dealer would need to inspect your Jeep in person first. If you end up scheduling an appointment with a dealer and need any assistance working with them, just DM us!

There's a noise on cold startup. But not on every Jeep. I hear it rarely on mine, more often on my wife's. Hers is also louder. I have never found out what causes it, but I have found out that many people have heard it with the Pentastar 3.6 on a lot of different vehicles.

I have had several good mechanics check it out and they have heard it but have no idea what causes it. It has happened since new, and it always goes away after a minute or so.

I have a youtube playlist of the noise coming from a Wrangler, Caravan, Journey, Challenger, Chrysler 300. I have yet to find anyone who had the noise solved, or ever had any mechanical failure associated with it.

The only thing I have figured out is my JKU tends to make the noise more if I leave the climate control on Auto.

Video Example (not mine):
