Front axle U joints

I have a 2012 JK, only 40k miles on it, not driven hard, almost the only time I used the 4x4 is in winter stores, and few occasions to fishing spots, nothing hard.
Now when I'm making turns my steering wiggles a bit, only thing I can think is the front axle U joints.
Wear and tear are out of question.

Can they dry out after 7 years and not too much mileage?

Unfortunately because it is still winter here I haven't got the chance to jack it up to verify.

The u joints get beat on even if you're not in 4wd, and that's a lot of winters for something that far towards the end of the drivetrain or in the suspension. One or both wouldn't be surprising.

Over time they rust up inside and seize causing them to not want to flex when you turn. Just as well count on replacing them both while you're at it.

Thanks for your replies, I know the procedure to change them, but not equipped, how much should it cost for this job? Pieces are cheap but how much time?

4wd or 2wd doesn't matter, the u joints are always rotating while you are driving. 7 years of Canadian winters, not surprising they are ready for replacement.

I would suspect a number of other things before the axle u-joints. Such as the track bar, tie rod, or ball joints. Steering stabilizer might have gone but that is not usually a primary source of the problem but rather a secondary item that can mask another issue.

I replaced my passenger side front axel u joint this winter on my 2012 . Had a shudder backing up turning wheel out of driveway. I ran into problems. The parts place computer said the u joint for my 2012 Jeep was Moog 371. The garage installed it. It didn’t last 24 hours. Took it back. They went to dealer and was told they needed the vin#. Half way through the build year they ran out of yokes and went to a larger size. The part# from Mopar was #68145053AA.

I just picked up this package off of Amazon... had the same issues with u-joints and unit bearings were shot as well. Saved a bunch in labor vs. stub ends and u-joints, and planning on a new 44 axle assemly in the spring... so no need for anything fancy.

They were doing a PowerStop brake kit at the same time. No brainer.
