OP, at what odometer mileage did this occur?

Fabulous, and I thought there might not be anything more to worry about with my '13....

OP, good looking out. I read a thread on here a week ago where the poster changed his oil, and something went wrong and he blew his motor. He was very very vague but sounded like the same problem. Because he continued to drive it FCA wouldn't cover the warranty claim when it crapped out.

This is what you get when build an oil filter housing out of plastic. This should be an aluminum piece or any kind of metal to put up with the oil pressure, heat and abuse. Makes me long for an old school spin on filter.

Did you buy the Lifetime Warranty? I did.. I assume it will be covered.

How do oil filter housings wear out?

They don't - they just fly apart!

64,500 miles and I only have the standard 5/100k powertrain warranty. Several other people on different, non-jeep, forums had it happen in the 6x,xxx range too.

Dealer said this part is covered under the powertrain warranty, and it's listed as such in his computer.

I bet you this happens a lot at jiffy lube/walmart/etc... and it goes unnoticed or they just cover it up and send you on your way. I'm not exactly sure if it would cause a problem during normal operation to have this removed. It's listed as a high oil pressure bypass valve (i think that what it was called). I guess if there is unusually high pressure that would damage the oil filter or oil filter housing, it bypasses it all together. Now with it missing, I'm not sure if it's in bypass mode or filter mode.

Chrysler bumped my warranty to the 5-year bumper to bumper after my coolant debacle, but powertrain remains the same.....

Hopefully by the time mine is up that high in mileage (only at 25K now) someone comes out with a fix for this valve other than replacing the whole damn housing. In the meantime, I'll have to keep an eye on it when I change oil, I'll be doing one in the next week or so.

I, too, wish there was a metal spin-on filter located in the same spot. Plastic has no business in an oil filter housing environment, IMO.

Update:

Dealer replaced the oil filter housing free of charge under the 5yr/100k mile powertrain warranty. They grilled me to see if I was negligent and caused the failure, but in the end they replaced it with minimal hassel.

Eeek. If the valve is broken then you are circulating unfiltered oil into your engine. Any chance you can post a pic of the entire piece?

Sorry I cannot as it is at the dealer for repairs.

I apologize in advance if I screw this up; this is my first post on this forum. I’ve been lurking in the shadows for quite some time, but recently got back into the Jeep world a few months ago with the recent purchase. Anyhow, after reading this post I’m certain this failure occurred on my last oil change, however at the time, I had no idea. I turned my back to grab the new filter and “pop”! I thought something just fell off the shelf in my garage, but I later found the broken plastic piece, thinking it just came off of one of the many projects I do in my garage…Needless to say I’ve been driving the Jeep for 3000k+ miles with ZERO issues. As a result of reading this post and learning what indeed happened to my Jeep, I took it to my local dealership this morning. They are now refusing to replace it under the powertrain warranty( I’m at 62k miles) because this is not a “known issue”…Can anyone give me some advice on how I might could get them to cover this obvious flaw? Thank You

Sorry to hear about your trouble. It took a little work to convince my dealer to cover the repair. I showed them a YouTube video of a mopar mechanic talking about this specific issue on numerous 3.6 pentastar engines. I also had to describe step by step the oil filter change process. I changed my purolator filter to a Mopar filter just to be safe, prior to brining it in for warranty repair. It (oil filter housing) is listed under the power train warranty as a covered part. They can look this up in their system and it will show this part being covered. You can try a different dealer or call Jeep directly. However, wait until all other options are exhausted before calling jeep, because if they deny it then it is documented in the system and you'll have a very hard time getting it covered.

StuckinOH gave you good advise. This is well enough documented that if you brought to them a list of links everywhere it is mentioned on message boards, and the youtube video describing the issue it will be hard for them to claim it isn't common. I'd get Chrysler Corporate involved if things don't go your way, provide them with the links if need be. Make sure you're using Mopar filters. Good luck.

Thanks demarpaint, I'll provide them a part # this morning and see what happens from there. What's interesting is that they(Jeep Dealership) did the last oil change prior to me doing this one myself. I simply removed their Mopar filter and "POP"!

Yeah.. well, that's a $200+ part that needs to be replaced. Not sure what they charge for labor.

This is the reason they changed the design for the 2014 MY..

They moved that spring into the cap..

I purchased one of these off of ebay(I only paid $80 at the time). Took the nipple off the housing and put it in my existing housing without changing out the whole thing.

In my mind, it's better than handing the Wrangler over to the dealership monkeys for days.

Yeah - great idea. I haven't seen anyone post on doing this to fix the issue.

Do you have any removal/install tips you can share? (I'm just imagining myself doing this and mucking up the new part...)

Yep... I agree with the others, you're the only Jeeper that has replaced this plastic piece. This component can't be purchased separate... which makes this unacceptable in my view. FCA has made this a non-serviceable part.. making us buy the entire oil cooler and filter housing..

Keep us in the loop how this turns out.. we may need to petition Jeep to make this a service part - I know they can get them from the supplier that makes this oil cooler-filter housing. They just don't want to stock them.

IMO I think you should receive a honorary 5 year WF membership for risk taking and showing WF members there's a viable alternative.

If I pulled the purse strings around here, I'd vote yes in a heart beat on that 5 year WF membership.

Yea a write up with pics for those people with that design filter housing would be great. I wonder if anyone has tried the filter housing cooler assembly out of a newer Pentastar in one of the older engines had any luck?

Well, I have good news to report! After the advice I received from a few of you, my dealership covered the replacement of the oil filter assembly under the powertrain warranty. They were stuck on blaming me for "breaking" the valve during my oil change, but after forcing the service manager to watch the video of this common failure and telling him I know this part shows on his computer as a covered part, they quickly changed gears and assured me they would take care of it. In the end I'm happy, just sux I had to go through so much to get there...Thanks again to all that helped me along the way

Awesome on getting that fixed, and it's good to know for any of us that run into that down the road.

Great! They try pulling stunts like that from time to time on the uneducated consumer. Retail pays more than warranty for repairs, and most service writers work on commission. IIRC they get no commission for warranty repairs. Retail work the tech gets paid better and so does the service writer. He tried...........

So for someone with a 2013 pentastar, that is out of warranty and wants to do their own oil changes. Is it worth it to just bite the bullet and just buy the upgrade housing to prevent this catastrophic failure? Or is it a 1/1000 chance?

Must be a problematic part since they changed it in 2014.

Not a bad idea for a DIY'er.
