Hood Lock - Bolt vs Mopar

I remember reading on here one time that the Bolt and the Mopar were the same:

https://www.quadratec.com/products/13103_110.htm

https://www.quadratec.com/products/55216_9050.htm

There is almost a $100 price difference, is it really the same product?

I thought the Mopar one was made by Bolt, but was a heavier duty version.???

Maybe you are right, the Mopar one has this note:

Quote:
Needs to be Keyed/Coded by your local Jeep Dealer or Locksmith. Assembly Required.
whereas the Bolt one says:

Quote:
Simply insert your ignition key and twist to program and the lock tumblers are set.

I have the bolt version and have been very happy with it. You need a heavy duty rivot gun to install it. I also have the bolt version receiver hitch lock and a bolt padlock. They are all keyed to my Jeep key by inserting it and turning. Never had any issue with them.

I picked mine up on Amazon for about 55.00 and was fortunate to have the rivet gun at work

I have the mopar version and it is solid. It also is self keying. Just insert your ignition key and done. You will need the heavy duty rivit gun but that is cheap at harbor freight.

I know nothing about Rivet Guns, but I see multiple recommendations for one at Harbor Freight

Is there a specific model I want?

As an FYI - the latest version of the MOPAR now must be assembled and keyed - it's not longer the same as just inserting your key in and being done.

Bolt Lock Question

I have an Angry Bird Grill. Does anybody know if the Bolt Lock would work on an Angry Bird?

I have the Tuffy and it works great with no rivets needed. Also the cheapest solution.

Two bolts on top and two bolts in front. It comes with a self tapping bolt. It's been rock solid for me and completely eliminates hood flutter.

No, the grille extends lower than the OEM grille and covers the lock.

Thanks Mustanger,
I'd like to do a lock but having trouble finding something that will work. Reviews for the Catch Latches don't sound so great. I like the Bolt concept. Too bad it doesn't work with my grill. Thanks for your feedback.

There is a meshbgrill I really like in Quadratec that has a hole for the lock, but it is pretty pricey, T-Rex brand

I wonder if you could give a machine/fab shop a call. See if they have one that you could use real quick

Cool I also went with Tiffy , very nice .

Tuffy has been good for me ; and they have a customer service number which is answered by very helpful techs . I didn't need to call them myself , because I installed it myself into JK holes which were already there . Personally , I Highly recommend Tuffy .

They have one for 20 bucks on Amazon, if for some reason they don't have it at Harbor Freight, I will just get it from Prime

I have the Bolt Version and been very happy with it, if you live near a Harbor Freight they have some in stock for very inexpensive that gets the job done.

I purchased the Mopar lock. The dealer key coded it for free and I had a 15% off coupon from the Mopar site. Total was 146 including tax. I can say for certain, the Mopar lock is different than the Bolt lock in size. Side to side the Mopar is wider and it has protection all around the back, looks like the Bolt one doesn't. Not saying one is better, just that they are different in physical appearance. The Bolt is key coded by inserting and turning while the Mopar requires the tumbler to be manually set to your key code.

I'm not super handy but found the installation to be easier than anticipated. I did watch a few youtube videos first, they where a big help!

Link for 15%: https://www.mopar.com/en-us/savings/...SAAEgI-EfD_BwE

The Mopar instructions provide how to assemble the lock but not how to install it. The video below sovled that.

If you haven't installed it already, I would contact [email protected]

He works for bolt and has acknowledged there is a design flaw in the bolt locks that allows someone to insert their hand between the local and condenser and manually release the hood latch.

See this thread: https://www.wranglerforum.com/f274/bo...k-2061633.html

Jason will send you a retrofit kit which will patch this design flaw permenantly securing the hood latch.
