How accurate is TPMS?

Compared to my tire gauge it reads about 2 psi more. Is this pretty typical?

Depending on the quality of your gauge yes it is possible and probably pretty common for the sensors to read off from a quality gauge. I have a gauge accurate down to the tenth of a pound from my road course racing days and it's always 1-3 lbs different than the onboard systems.

Thanks... I felt like the gauge would be the more accurate measure.

I've compared my TPMS vs. precision tire gauge vs. pen-style gauge. All within 1-2 psi of each other.

My Jeep computer reads the tire pressure about 2 PSI higher than my hand held electronic gauge.

Anyone know how often the TPMS poll each of the wheels sensors? Is it milliseconds? Minutes? I guess my concern is the amount of time it takes the system to initialize the sensors after rotations. It can take several minutes to miles for them to register!

So if that is true, then really how often are they sending pressure reports to the dashboard computer?

If I was to hit a nail and immediately start losing pressure (not a complete blowout), when would the system alert me to the sudden or slow drop in pressure?

The number one cause of blowouts is supposedly under inflated tires. Driving around at highway speeds on a slowly leaking tire is dangerous, especially if the sensors aren't polling data for another 2 minutes etc?

Guess this is why the manual says the TPMS isn't a substitute for regularly checking them yourself. I'm still getting use to the sidewall bulge/flex. My last vehicle had low profile car tires. Unless they were FLAT, I couldn't tell as there was very little visual indication in the sidewalls. The jeep tires always look low to me even at normal pressure because there is such a visual bulge in the sidewalls.
