Installing a Teraflex hinged tire carrier

and was wondering how many folks painted the raw metal under the stock hinge, how many coats of paint/primer did you put on, and how long did you waited for the paint/primer to dry before installing the Teraflex hinge?

Mine was actually painted, I cleaned it up with some Wendex before installing the new carrier

Painted mine. I'm not a paint/ body guy, and will likely get blasted, but here's what I did: light sand and clean on the bare metal. Taped off, leaving about 1/4" of paint showing around the bare. Gloss black rustoleum rattle can. Two coats, waited about an hour. I was surprised how well the black matched. Installed carrier, it covered all the new paint anyway. Probably not the best option, but I figured it was better than leaving it bare.

I have a 2015 so I wonder if at some point they started painting prior to installing hinges?

I don't know, mines a 2014 it's a hard rock anvil, I thought it wasn't painted at first, There was a bunch of black crap, I cleaned it up to see what was behind it. I guess the prior owner could've done something to it

I painted mine. There was already early signs of corrosion on my 2012 Indiana JK.

I sanded it, gave it three quick coats of primer, 10 minutes to dry between. Didn't sand again, which would be a mistake in most cases. Gave it three coats of OEM paint ($10/can from Quadratec). It didn't match at all - the surface was completely rough compared to the smooth clearcoat from the factory.

I suck at paint.

It doesn't matter. I waited 24 hours for it to dry, and then put on the hinge. It covered it completely. It should prevent rust, and that's all it needs to do.

I installed mine in the middle of winter, with my garage being too small and full of tools and bikes, I installed outside and just cleaned behind the stock hinges and sprayed a good layer of fluid film to protect the bare paint.

One day I might take it off to paint it, but I highly doubt it. Lol

My 2016 was not painted, just some over spray. Cleaned up gunk that had collected and lightly painted 2 coats of OEM code matching paint.

That's exactly what I did on the 2011 and that's what I am going to do on the 2016.

I cleaned and put primer on it, no need to match the paint, since it doesn't show.
