JK Rear main seal, remove transmission or not?

Hi yall,

First post here, but have been lurking since I bought my 2007 about 2 years ago. Its already got a new motor, but yesterday i was swapping the clutch slave cylinder when i noticed a tell tale rear main seal leak. Ive read opinions saying that you have to drop the transmission, and others saying its a two piece seal that you can get through the oil pan. My best guess so far is that I do have to drop it, but i hope im wrong. The website i subscribe to for shop manuals for some reason doesnt have a diagram showing it. Its probably not allowed so I wont mention the name, but its there a good online resource for shop manuals/diagrams?

First thing I'd do is buy the seal. You'll know right away whether or not it is two piece. I have done one two piece myself though. The aggravation to get the engine high enough to drop the pan and do it with the transmission in place was a time killer. I have done a couple of others and just dropped the tcase and transmission. Nothing on a JK though.

Yeah, first go to the store and see what it has. One piece your dropping trans or pulling motor.I have done an older one with the 2 piece seal. Not too bad but you will probley have to loosen the main caps alittle to lower the crank a bit so you can roll the seal around. Clean it up good where the seal contacts the block and cap, then just a bit of sealer on the back side of the seal and where the 2 ends of the seal meet together. Lub the seal area. Good luck.
