New 2011 JK Owner - Door Open alarm question

First off, I've been lurking on the site since I bought my Jeep in August and have found many helpful things. Thanks for that!

Secondly, and I've searched, but not found my exact problem...

My jeep doesn't have a door open light on the diver's side door. The passenger side and tailgate do have the door open light.

My dome light doesn't come on when I open the driver's side door, and there is no dummy alarm when I leave the headlights on. The power to the head unit also does not turn off when I open the door.

I've seen several threads where people have door alarms and dome lights that are on even with the door closed, but none that have no alarms with the door open.

I've checked what I think is the correct fuse (my wife has a 2014 JKU that everything seems to work correctly on, so I swapped the fuse from hers). Same results.

Am I correct in thinking it's probably the door latch? I have power windows, power locks, and power heated mirrors, which all work as they should. My Jeep just thinks the door is always closed.

Advice?

Have you tried unplugging the harness down by your left foot and plug it back in? Maybe check to see if any of the pins are bent or missing down in the plug.

I have tried that. All the pins look okay, though maybe I should get some contact cleaner and clean it all up before throwing any parts at it?

Do you have a friend who owns a jeep with power windows? You could swap with him for a minute and see where the problem goes. If it stays with the Jeep or follows the door would reveal a lot.

Have you poked around in your EVIC settings? You might check these, to see if changing helps resolve your problem. More info in your owners manual if needed.

Check these out;
Key Off Power Delay
Headlamp Off Delay

It's not in the setting. I've tried changing all of them, and while the passenger door does have a door open light, the driver's doesn't.

Hmmm....

My wife has 2014 4 door with all the same electric options. Assuming the front doors of the 4 door are the same as the 2 door, I could swap the door out pretty easily.

Good idea.

I didn't think it would work but figure resetting things might help. My gut says you have a broken wire some where, but tracing it is going to be a challenge.

Definitely sounds like a bad connection. Mine will do the exact same thing sometimes. Window and door locks still work. I just have to reach down and give it a squeeze for the doom light to come on.

I haven't yet. Tried swapping doors between my 2011 2 door and my wife's 2014 4 door, but the wiring harness is different.

I'd say the probability is high that the wire going to the door latch as become detached, or the switch inside the latch mechanism has failed. Getting to that latch (from what I have read) is a little challenging but I'm sure you will find a tutorial on youtube. Good luck.

second the latch part. some cars have a door pin that is depressed when the door is closed, i dont think jeep does though, so it must be in the latch.

Got it fixed today!

After taking off the outer door panel (simple) and then the inner door panel (not so simple), I unplugged the latch and plugged in a new one that I'd ordered (I didn't take the old one out, just unplugged the wire harness and plugged it into the new one.)

Still no dome light, still no door ajar light, still no dummy ding to let me know the key is in the ignition or the lights are on.

So, I got out my multimeter and started testing continuity on the 4 wires going to the latch mechanism. One of them tested as open.

Turns out one wire was broken right where it attaches to the connector by your left foot. You couldn't see that it was broken, but as soon as I lightly pulled on that wire, it came right out of the connector.

So, a bit of time with a soldering iron, and everything now works as it should.

I'm happy.

Now, I get to test Rock Auto's return policy. I don't mind if I have to pay shipping back. I just hope they'll refund me the $70 or whatever that I paid for the latch mechanism.
