Newbie - Verify wheel/tire/lift selection please

Newbie here to the forum, Jeeps and not much beyond the basic car maintenance realm either.

I'm in the market in next few weeks for a certified '12 or better JKU. I've been doing my reading/research here for a while before joining and compiled my initial ideas of mods I want to make straight out of the box. It will definitely be a DD and light to moderate initial offroad use. I imagine mostly trails, mud, fire roads and the like, though like most of my endeavors I will probably get hooked! But don't see any immediate rock crawling. I don't want to overbuild it from the start, but don't want something that I will have to throw away a few months from now when I start going crazy.....

So what I am thinking is the following:

RK 2.5 Stock Mod Lift or TF 2.5" Lift Kit - was set on the TF until I read more about the RK, multi rate and it's upgradability. I plan on adding some weight to the vehicle, hence leaning towards the RK?

MT ATZ P3 in 315/70/17 - thanks @Hivedr for the great review!

MT Deegan Pro 2 Wheels 17x9 (or similar wheel) - 4.5BS and -12 offset

ACE Rock Sliders - not absolutely necessary since no crawling, but for general protection and use as step up (for kids)

ACE JK Pro Rear Bumper with Tire Carrier

Front Bumper with 8000 lb winch - undecided on brand/style bumper, synthetic vs. steel cable

Possibly a set of Delta LED headlights and the Raxiom nav unit.


What about armor, specifically seen some references that it's cheap insurance to have oil pan / transmission skid plate, especially with an automatic? Thinking Rock Hard here.

A lot of questions/info, but let me know if I am making any major errors, things don't fit/work right together, missing anything crucial or generally anything I should be considering. Thanks!

Anyone? Any feedback would be helpful, but mainly concerned that the wheels/tires and lift all work together and no rubbing etc.

Everything you have listed is good stuff, IMO. Don't know anything bout the brand tires and wheels you listed , if you get a auto though can't go wrong with the Rockhard skid that's what I run. ACe makes good stuff....

If you're not really running it off-road then skids are kind of a luxury instead of a necessity. With the Rock Krawler kit you will be needing things like bump stops and possibly spring retainers. You will also need exhaust spacers since you are running the 3.6L. Geometry correction brackets or front lower control arms are something I would run. The Ace pro series bumpers are nice. I had one on my last Jeep. I also like Full Metal Fab, JCR, and Rock Hard bumpers too.

Decent list for a light wheeler. Might want to add a CB into that mix too. Won't cost much.

My .02. Make SURE that whatever Jeep you buy has at least 3.73 gears, 4.10's would be even better if you go with a rubicon. Stay away from the 3.21 if you already plan on almost 35's right off the bat.

How much you looking to spend all said and done?

Thanks. I guess on paper I was thinking around $6500 for the mods to a stock Sport, but that was keeping the current gearing. I guess I could increase the budget to a Rubicon, but then hold off on a few of the mods. What is the cost of re-gearing a Sport?

Thanks for the feedback. Would you recommend the TF 2.5" kit instead? I guess I have to look into the cost of the lower arms etc. Have also been reading up on going with a truss on the front.

^regearing varies depending on location. Here in SoCal, it's about 900-1k.

I run the ace bumpers. good stuff. Got rear ended a couple of weeks ago. Only minor scratches.

Front is ace as well with the light bar option. If you go ace up front, be aware that if you do the pro series, there is quite a bit of cutting involved and you'll have to move your vacuum pump. Nice bumper though.

Supertramp13, if you're looking for a kit that is a bit more plug and play then yes the Teraflex 2.5 is a good option. We have a package deal using that kit that you can customize here.
