Oil change indicator

My '15 JK has about 7500 miles on it currently, and my odometer has recently been saying "change oil." My last oil change was at 6000 miles, so this is where I am confused. Why is it saying I need an oil change after 1500 miles?

Also I could have sworn there was an oil light on the instrument cluster, but I didn't see an illuminated oil light when I started getting this message.

Whoever did the oil change did not reset the oil monitoring system.

I did the oil change, but did not reset the oil monitoring system. I did not think the oil monitoring system was at fault here because it is such an odd mileage (76xx) and well beyond the recommended change interval, but then again I have no idea how these newer vehicles work.

It is duty cycle based, not mileage. The reminder might come on at 4,347 miles or it might come on at 7,632 miles.

To reset it:

Quote:
Turn the ignition switch to the ON/RUN position (do not
start the engine).

Fully depress the accelerator pedal slowly three times
within 10 seconds.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF/LOCK position.

NOTE: If the indicator message illuminates when you
start the vehicle, the oil change indicator system did not
reset. If necessary, repeat this procedure.

It's actually not beyond the recommended change interval, which IIRC is 10,000 miles.
Mine goes off (light comes on) right around 7,500 as well.

Follow the procedure posted by RoadiJeff.

Mine usually shows around 25% remaining at 8000 or so miles. This last time I got the change message at just over 6000 miles. Pretty big difference. I never change it when it says, I just changed it at every 8000. But apparently it can fluctuate quite a bit.

So you are saying it comes on based on how you drive the vehicle? Also is the oil light supposed to come on as well? Right now, the oil light is not on, but the odometer is giving me this message.

Still interesting that it waited so long to come on when the owner's manual specifically states that oil change intervals should not exceed 4000 miles.

The oil light shouldn't come on when it's oil change time. That comes on if there is a major oil pressure drop, etc.

Old school rule of thumb on dummy lights...

If it's a red indicator light, it's an emergency issue.

If it's amber, check on it at your earliest convenience.

No. If you don't want to use it, whenever it activates just re-set it. If someone wants to use it as a "recommendation", whenever the oil is changed it should be re-set whether it has activated or not. Only early JK's, 07-11 with 3.8's a dealer could set a fix'd oil change reminder indication based upon mileage if the customer requested it, using their Starscan programmer. However, it couldn't be turned off.

It's "duty" based as Jeff mentioned. A number of running and driving factors triggers it through the use of an algorithm. According to the book, it's a "recommendation". Max. time, mileage and severe duty situations, if it doesn't activate to reflect what you believe to be severe duty, trumps the oil change indicator. The only 4,000 mile change I believe is for a severe duty situation. "Normal" operation on a new JK is 1 year or 10K miles max. Other earlier JK's are different and 3.8's require at least a bi-annual oil change even if there's a low mileage situation, according to the manual. Each owner should check their manual for whatever year JK they have.

That's not correct, check the manual again.

As I mentioned earlier, and again mentioned here:
