Replaced the cigarette lighter with a dual USB port

I have a 2016 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Freedom Edition and I have tried 3 different Android Auto head units, each time reusing the console USB port by removing the Uconnect system.

The Sony XAV-AX100 worked perfectly fine. The Sony XAV-AX5000 hardly worked at all. My current Alpine iLX-W650 was probably working well over 50% but still pretty problematic.

I did a lot of troubleshooting, I even made a post about the Sony XAV-AX5000 on this forum.

I eventually decided the wiring for the console USB is just not compatible with Android Auto.

I tried a few different options but wound up replacing the cigarette lighter port on the dash with a flush mount dual USB port. I have not had any Android Auto issues since the USB port install.

I made a video of it:

I have the xav-ax100. It would work with the factory USB port so I put another one on the center console. Had to make a new hole in the metal security box that I have in there.

CarPlay for the Jeep

I Installed a JVC in my daughters Subaru. Factory usb wouldn’t work with the Android auto. The aftermarket one works fine.

Nice job! I ended up running a wire that sites behind the shifter and under the pocket, not ideal, but works. Then swapped out the cigarette lighter for a USB power only.

I like what you did though and may follow your lead later. Android Auto has been finicky with my Pioneer unit. Works great when it does but I've had issues where a bounce can cause it to disconnect.

I first tried just running a long USB extension cord from the back of the head unit to the area between the seat and the console, but it also had some issues. I assumed that was problematic due to the length.

The benefits of this current setup is the relatively short wire run

Android Auto is extremely sensitive to both cable quality and length. It's pushing a ton of data. I wish "they" would release Android O to non-Google devices already, my Pioneer does AA over WiFi, I assume the additional bandwidth would be a huge benefit.

I put the exact same one in mine when I installed a Kenwood 994S. Was a relative breeze to install.

I mounted mine with the plugs vertical - the one closest to the driver is the one for CarPlay. The other can also be used for streaming if needed.

I left Uconnect in (don't use it) - so the console USB still has power, just doesn't talk to anything.

I thought about drilling a hole and re-mounting the cig lighter, but decided to just let the plug dangle behind the dash.

In my experience, the console USB port did NOT work when I used this Metra USB-to-mini-USB adapter under the dash
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

But it DID work with PAC USB adapter, which is what I'm using now:

I had both of those. I had the PAC first from my original Sony XAV-AX100 setup.

When I ordered the Sony XAV-AX5000 from Crutchfield with the added accessories they sent the Metra one which I originally just left in the bag.

Once I started having so many issues, I switched to the Metra and it worked better but still had issues.

However, I still think the Sony XAV-AX5000 just had some issues in general.

Since I switched to the USB cigarette lighter port I have had zero disconnects

FYI. Just in case someone else is looking to remove the cigarette plug. I believe when I replaced my cigarette plug do to a busted cover, I pushed out the front and then was able to press the nubs to get the outside trim ring removed.

I tried that and couldn't get it to budge, but mine might have been jacked up.

The dealer installed a backup camera and tapped into the cigarette lighter for power and they might have damaged it when messing with it. They did some questionable work in some areas

I went with this one https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mounted it in the drivers side knee panel where the little horizontal vents are, I don't know what it was originally for, but it fits perfect.

I did not have a console usb port. My maestro hook up called for a data (usb) and aux cable to hook between it and the H/U. I assume that was for use with a factory USB. I eliminated that to free up my usb and aux ports on the HU, hope it all will work like that

I installed a square USB port on the back side of the glove box:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
and plugged a small-size 256 GB flash drive in it to hold all my music.

Mine works perfect with the PAC cable. I got rid of the Uconnect. Your problem may be related to the phone settings specifically the Bluetooth protocol. I opened the developer setting on my Pixel 2 and set up manual to Bluetooth 1.4. Android auto uses Bluetooth for all music anf phone call. The cable is mostly for power and to tell the phone to enable Android auto and interface for Google maps and others apps that you should not be used while driving. Hope that helps. My head unit is Kenwood ddx6705s.
