Rough Idle/Harmonic Vibration

I recently lifted my 2016 JKU and had an aftermarket flange style double cardan front driveshaft installed. After I picked it up I noticed that it had a rough idle/harmonic vibration when stopped while in drive and a loud rotational vibration between 30-40 mph (much louder and present at most speeds while in 4wd).

The original shop couldn't figure it out, the dealership said the DS may be at a bad angle but wasn't certain and sent me to a specialist. The specialist said the DS seemed to be defective/cardan joint binding. Pulled the front DS and loud idle/harmonic vibration subsided.

I contacted the manufacturer and they had me take measurements and sent out a custom DS within two days.

The custom DS was installed and the rotational vibrations went away. However, while stopped with the vehicle in drive the harmonic vibrations/rough idle is still present (much louder in 4wd). If I shift to neutral or park it goes away. In addition, the RPMs stay normal while the rough idle is felt/harmonic vibration heard.

The DS manufacture said they do not feel it is DS related since the shaft is not moving while stopped and stated they did not know what would cause that. The specialist said it was odd as well. If you pull the shaft it goes away completely though.

Has anyone else experienced this? Does anyone know what could be causing this issue?

I have to agree that the shaft is not the issue if you are not moving. It is likely the Torque Converter. That is the only thing turning when you are sitting still. There will be pressure from the Torque Converter when the trans is in gear but not in Park or Neutral.

You said if you pull the shaft it goes away? Is the shaft hitting something when you load the driveline by putting it in gear? The exhaust maybe.

I'm going with torque converter, it applying pressure may just be making the ds sing a little, I wouldn't say it's damaging but I can see it being annoying. What company did you use for the shaft? Take some pictures too of the angles and such. I doubt after going to a specialist anything will be wrong but you never know.

I had the same issue with my JK with vibration. Check the bracket under your transmission and ensure it hasn't moved / shifted. Also check to ensure its tight.

When I took mine in, the dealer knew how to fix it immediately.

I haven't had an issue since.

Would the torque converter stop making noise when the shaft is removed?

I don't believe the driveshaft is making contact with anything, the dealership put it to full droop and other positions to check, but I can check again.

I will check the transmission bracket, or have the shop check it.

I will also try to get some pictures today.

How much lift do you have ? Specifics, are running any after market skids ? ( engine/ tranny skid ) exhaust spacers . I'm assuming you had none of these issues prayer to lift and DS install . Oops just saw 6" of lift correct are you running Adjustable CA's for pinion and caster

Adams huh? I had to get mine trued and rebalanced even from brand new. Helped my 60 mph vibe big time. But if you aren't moving, it really must be interference between two hard parts or an engine/trans mount.

No aftermarket skids. I have exhaust spacers but they did not need to be installed. My gears are currently sitting in my house. The specialist said hold off on them until we see how the custom shaft holds up for a week or so.

The original shop was supposed to do the regear then called and said they would need all new bearings otherwise they would all break. I said forget it. I'm wondering if they opened it up and broke something...

I was reading all these 2012 issues with manuals and about that time my exhaust spacers started rattling. Bang the exhaust see if it rattles

When I take it back to the specialist I will give him a list of all of these ideas. He may have checked them already but I am not certain. Hopefully something will solve it.

If it's just a vibration/noise and no issue I can deal with it, I just don't want to cause a major issue.
