Snorkel design

So i've been looking at snorkels and I really like the the Rugged Ridge XHD Snorkel. I won't be a regular deep water guy or anything, its just more of a what if scenario (I've already raised my breathers ect). I've been poking around watching installation videos and everything and it got me thinking.

Has anyone ever attempted to make a homemade snorkel that basically clips onto the stock intake? it seems like it would be an easy job and could be temporary (part of why I like the XHD). The only thing I could think of is that people have said before that the stock airbox has holes in the bottom to let water drain out? I've seen people cut up their hood and run them through the holes, but they all seem to attach to the airbox itself. I had been picturing a semi-flexible plastic hose type thing that would curve around to near the windshield which then could be attached to a larger, nicer looking snorkel.

Again I am almost certainly just going to end up getting the XHD. The thought just crossed my mind.

yeah exactly and for me it doesn't make sense. I'm not going to be doing any serious crossings and certainly not deep mud.

A SNORKEL WILL NOT HELP YOU!

I know this from experience. See my avatar. That Jeep was totalled, and it never got water in the engine. Fact is, your electrical system, sensors, computers and other things will be destroyed long before the water gets to the airbox. A snorkel is just Jeep rice, it has zero function.

(On old Jeeps without computers, they did work.)

Yeah I read what happened. I'm sorry that sucks, but at least insurance paid in the end right?

disagree, I run with JKs with snorkels, they get in over thier hoods and they are still running.
my air intake is raised under the hood and I can go up to the bottom of the headlites so I have to be more careful than they, but we have fun going where others fear to thread.

how do you seal these electronics? Down here in Florida you never know how deep a water hole is...

Care to explain why mine was killed then? What other waterproofing do they have on them?
What fried? snorkel is a CAI, it can be useful for one aspect of keeping an engine alive in water but going deep and staying in long will require a few things to be plugged. the idea is when crossing water to move with the current you create not plow through it. Saving the engine is all the snorkel is suppose to do and if your engine didn't suck up water then id say it worked great.

I can't say "what fried" but they totaled it. Wouldn't even try to start, computer was freaked out. Then there's the problem that the interior fills with water pretty quickly, so that's at risk too.
Interior is fine ive had doors and top off through texas storms a few times, just pull the plugs to drain it. I can see the computer causing an issue but that's easy to seal off, you can seal half the doors to keep water from coming in but once at the window its pretty hard to stop, next think will be all the holes in the firewall that's how the electronics will get screwed if you can seal all those im willing to bet you'll have a pretty water resistant vehicle. Everything under the hood is made to get wet and with plugs all through the cab they obviously designed it to see some level of water.

EDIT: let me rephrase you cant seal but you can slow water, and if your moving its hard for water to get in as long as its not going against you. A sitting jeep in water you cant help the water at that point it will get in some way.

Where is the computer? anybody know?

So because one guy "fried his electronics" by getting them wet all snorkels are useless and a waste of money.... hmmm
I personally know of several jk's that ingested water and caused engine damage... they had engines replaced and ran perfectly fine afterwards.
No electrical issues.
Sounds like bad luck, faulty parts etc.

Yea I just found it the other day when putting in my HID ballast....I stuck it to the computer. So im going to guess they totaled yours because diagnosing would have been near impossible and the water must have traced a wire into the firewall and fried something in there or created a short that went back to the computer......see diagnosing would have been a joke. did you buy another jeep?

Everyone agrees that submerged vehicles are going to always be a nightmare, and they just total them. Think about all the stuff all over it, inside and out, that would be damaged or suspect. They didn't bother making a diagnosis. The adjuster looked at the water line on the door, said "It's done, you'll have a check in a week."

I got a 2015, very similar to the first one but with a few more options.
