The dreaded pentastar tick...

I got the tick on my ‘14 a few weeks ago and recognized it right away as lifter tick even before researching the issues with the pentastars and jeeps. I knew it wouldn’t blow up immediately so I waited until the wife and I were able to get it in. We are the second owner and it turns out the origins owner purchased it July 16th of 2014 and we are out of the Powertrain warranty by two weeks which sucks. Quote for replacement of all lifters and rockers was $1300.

I’m not against paying it, but one of my biggest concerns is that the cam got some strange wear and I’m paying this money now just to have more rocker or cam issues in the near future.

Anybody done the rocker and lifter repair and can give some feedback on how the repair shed? Should I plan on lifters and rockers every 60K miles or so? Should I ask them to replace the cam at the same time?

I saw a video on YouTube where if it was the back rocker ticking and the timing chain didn’t have to be removed. Here is what I did. When my Jeep was in service for the airbag recall I snuck back there and talked to the tech. Asked “hey you work on Jeeps on the side” he handed me his card and said “yep on the weekends $50 an hour”

Put some snake oil in it to quiet the tick and trade it in. The JL's come with a fresh warranty.

Mine developed the noise at start up that the dealer had the audacity to call it "normal" as well as throwing the cam sensor codes. I ended up with a new engine from outside of FCA installed by a shop I trust. Happy so far despite the increased cost.

Try @JeepCares
Maybe they can help the shop deal with those two weeks and get it properly covered under warranty. Subaru of America almost certainly would for theirs. They warrantied a part in our Subaru that shouldn't have failed that was a over a year out of warranty.

Didn't Chrysler extend the warranty for this problem?

Yeah, if you're doing the rockers and lifters, you want to do the cams.

In my old Bronco days, lifters and cams were always replaced as a set.

Hope you have better luck than I did. FCA wouldn't do anything without the dealer first looking at it and the dealer was useless. So far I'm out of pocket on a re-engineered engine from outside of FCA.

I had a tick on my 3.6, replaced the rocker arm myself. Inspected my cam real carefully and noticed no damage. Total cost of fix less than $25 and a days work. Do you for-sure have cam damage?

I do not know. I took it to the dealer because i kind of expected it to be inside the powertrain warranty and they did the diagnosis. I asked and they said the cam was fine but didn't have pictures for me.

@JeepCares is looking in to try to help me out. So fingers crossed i can get some help with this known issue!

Pictures of no, it sounds like they weren't trying to upsell you. That's a good sign.

I don't think they were, and the price seems fair talking to my regular independant mechanic that my family has been going to for 20 years. My only other experience with dealer service was for the airbag recall on the jeep, but i have bought 2 vehicles from this dealership in the past (although this jeep i bought used off a Mazda lot of all places).

I'm frustrated with the situation and the timing, but have been pleased with the dealership so far. It does suck that the jeep has 60K miles and needs this while my 170K mile '14 Tundra has not had a single repair since i've had it.

105k on a 15 JKU. Had the tick ... ended up with a rocker with the bearing being oval shaped and that dug into the cam. Had to replace cam, and went ahead and replaced all rocekrs and lifters. Also, my mechanic suggested doing spark plugs while he was in there (no labor). 1600.00 bucks but it sounds like it did when I drove it off the lot.

Update: @JeepCares is awesome. The nice folks over there helped me out by getting a case opened up with corporate. As a courtesy, since it was so recently out of warranty and a relatively common issue they refunded me the out of pocket expense for the repair.

I think Jeep may have earned a repeat customer. Very impressed with how they handled it and how quickly.

Awesome!! Glad it worked out so well for you. I have a 2018 JKS. No tick yet. Jeep on tickless.
