Thoughts on used spacers/adapters

I have a buddy who just got new wheels. He was running adapters in the rear only due to clearance of the rear links. He has one set (2) that are brand new, and the others he took off the rear. He told me today that He broke a stud on the jeep itself removing an adapter, and thinks it was cross threaded. I intend to inspect the two used ones, but not sure if anything I should be looking for other than stretched threads, and possibly damage to the rear aluminum where the studs for the adapter are seated. Will there be any visible or measurable issues at the stud mounting locations on the adapters if they were over torqued? Thanks for any thoughts.

If there is a question, then just replace the studs. Your only talking about $5-$10.

If he broke a stud on the Jeep then the adapter was not affected. I don't use them so I can't really comment.

2jeepsinCT is correct. If the stud was on the Jeep, you are good. If it was a spacer stud you would see it broken or he has already replaced it. Either way you should be good to go.

Same thing happened to me a couple of times with my SpiderTrax spacers. For me frustrated so I just ended up buying new wheels with the correct spacing.

For me, the issue was cross threading... Couldn't remove the lug, so I had to use a breaker bar pulling/pushing back and forth until the lug snapped off.

Luckily, it's only a few cents .75 to replace, but it sure is a pain to replace them. Some WD40 a hammer, and some muscle.

These are the times I wish I had a vice or a studd removal tool.

Have 1.5" aluminum spacers on all 4 of my 2011 JK UnL. Clears 33x12.5 grabbers. Have had them since 2012, no issues.

I know the spacer should be fine, but honestly my thought was if he managed to cross thread a lug on the jeep who is to say he didn't over torque the lugs on the spacers. I know it's paranoid, but just how I think.

I wouldn't worry about over torque issues. I can see how a person could easily cross-thread a nut when mounting the spacers.

Just remember to remove the caliber retaining rings. Add loctite when installing spacer. good to go

You may want to put some antiseize grease between the spacer and the rotor. Ask me how I know.

Thanks all I bought them. He didn't know the brand, but the new set was still in the box, and surprisingly they are SpiderTrax. I measured the threads on the used with a thread pitch gauge to make sure no stretching there, and used a a feeler gauge to measure the lip on the back of the studs of the new one, and compared to the old ones. No issues. Need a new nut for the one he stripped, but no big deal. I may have been to anal about it, but I would rather be anal than have an adapter fail.
