Whinning in Rear Diff

In need of help...I have a 2010 JK my rear differential starts humming after 30 minutes of driving. No issues until then... Changed out Rear diff (pinion) bearing and changed diff oil. I also just replaced my stock driveshaft with one from Adams driveshaft 30 days prior. Any idea where I should look next?

Just to clarify - did you have the same noise both before and after you changed the pinion bearing and diff oil? Which pinion bearing did you change, inner or outer? How did you set bearing preload? More info on the noise would also help - like is the noise only under load or coast, is it a consistent or cyclic noise, etc.

Did the noise start after the driveshaft install? Did you change the yoke on the rear pinion? Who did the install and how was it done? It's possible when the new yoke was installed they may have over tightened the pinion nut changing the preload on the bearings.... Please provide clarification as to what was done.

Everything said above. Most likely, when you or whoever changed the rear driveshaft, the yoke was also changed. If pinion nut toque as well as pre-load were not set correctly, then you've found your problem. Hopefully before it's too late.

Changing out a pinion bearing without setting preload properly will cause problems. Driving on it without the right preload will lead to premature gear failure and you'll have to rebuild the whole rear end.

So, I did more research (I took it to another mechanic). It turned out it was the front wheel bearings and u-joints that needed to be replaced. Damn thing was a head scratcher. Thanks for the quick replies...
