Why drill the knuckle for drag link flip?

Just a quick question that I cant find the answer to. Why do we need to drill the knuckle? What made me think of this are 3 reasons. One why cant you just buy what ever drag link you want put the end in the knuckle and and torque it down. Two, yeti has the do drill taper insert, I wonder would it work on any drag link flip?. Three even AEV who uses a stock RHD drag link for their flip kit needs to be drilled. I've changed drag links before and the hole looks the same from both sides to me. I've looked at the directions for AEV, Synergy, Teraflex(what I have), and many other and all require the hole to be drilled. I just don't understand why.

I believe it really is tapered. Get the yeti no drill link (same as AEV uses now) and then you don't have to drill.
