Winch turns on automatically

Anyone ever have there winch turn on automatically. Mine has twice over the last week bending the crap out of my bumper, ruining the fairlead along with a few other things. I was told it could be a faulty solenoid. Not sure i am buying that as it probably pulled for about 10 seconds then stopped (thankfully). The winch is remote it seems logical that something is interfering with it. For now the Positive cable is unhooked until a cut off switch is installed.

After the first time I assumed the remote got turned on some how and something must have pushed the in button. So I removed the remote and took the battery out of it. I came home tonight to see it happened again.

Your assumption on interference is probably correct. But... If it is the solenoid, a cut off switch won't help. The problem could still repeat anytime it's energized( only with a body part in the way). There's no wireless shirt off at the winch?

Just an FYI: even with the negative cable detached, chances are that your winch is still indirectly grounded to the chassis. I would recommend removing the positive cable.

Have you seen it happen yet? Do you leave it parked in a garage or outside? Assholes around here like to stick a paperclip in the remote terminals of unattended vehicle winches to turn them on.

I've had this happen with my remote - it was likely condensation/wires really close inside the relay. I rewired , taped the contacts and haven't had any issues since. I also keep my winch in freewheel - clutch off so just spins with no resistance if its accidentally activated. It keeps the hook on the D ring just fine this way.

This is a known issue with the Smittybilt X20 Gen 2. My solenoid was replaced by SB with the one that has the switch on the side.

Jeep is parked in the garage. I pulled the cover off and it is completely dry. We live in a dry climate, the winch is covered and like I said the jeep is parked in the garage. I will definitely add a cut off switch but like Mcrock said with it energized it could still eat itself. i would really like to know what exactly is causing this.
