Won’t shift out of 2nd great

My 2012 JK will shift into reverse, but is stuck in 2nd gear when I drive. The engine is also giving a P0642 ‘Sens Ref Voltage 1 Circ Low’ error.

This while I was riding hard on dunes when suddenly my sPOD’s power went out. The sPOD came back on after restarting the car, but then I found myself stuck in 2nd gear.

I’m taking the car to the mechanic tomorrow, but would like to come with some ideas first before they over charge me for checking every other thing they can think of. I’m suspefting that this is an electrical problem which is not related to the transmission.

Thanks,

Joel

The car has about 80,000 miles on it and is an automatic. It shifts into reserves just fine. I think the car may be in "limp" mode.

you being in Israel, is it petrol or diesel?
because although it means the same, the wiring and troubleshooting is a bit different.

P0642 indicates the voltage in the Primary 5 volt supply circuit is low. (For petrol it is PCM connector C2, pin 29) For diesel i have to look to fsm.
The Primary 5 volt circuit feeds the sensors for the accelerator pedal position circuit #1, crankshaft position, throttle body and some other sensors.
This error can come from such a simple thing as an oil pressure sensor going bad

The car is petrol. For some reason diesel is about as popular here as it is in the US. I just dropped the car off at the mechanic. I'm relieved that it's probably not a transmission problem. I hope they go straight and to the source. I appreciate the help.

Thanks,

Joel

It is most likely in limp mode. There is possibly a problem with the transmission, or transfer case, or maybe something else. More info which might help: https://www.obd-codes.com/p0642

The Mechanic Said

"Problem is in the gear . There is a plate in the gear that the sensors sit on . And that needs to be replaced"

Does this sound right?

The mechanic recently wired new lights to the car by tapping into existing electrical. Could this cause a problem?

Sure was. In fact I was driving in second gear for about a week. My code was p0750 but didn't show on the dash. Had to use an obdII reader to get it.
