The lease on my sedan is up and that means the little one will now need a seat in my Wrangler which was previously used just for fishing and trips to the beach. When the child car seat is installed on the rear bench seat the person sitting in the passenger seat...my wife...has to move her seat up and has very little leg room.

Question....Is there a way to move the brackets and rear bench seat back about 4 inches (reclaim room from the non-existent trunk) which would give the passenger side seat extra leg room? If so is this a safe thing to do?

I took a look at my '02, it seems possible in some respects. The seat is bolted through the floor and into a channel that runs between the frame rails. There may be enough room to redrill the holes and move the channel to the new holes. Problem may be moving seat back latch which is separate and bolted to the wheel well. It may also put the shoulder belts and seats belts at a bad angle. No telling what unexpected problems you may run into.

I had the same problem when I first got my Jeep (always remember pickup date of new Jeep delayed by 9/11, Jeep dealer was forced to close because an Air Force base was across the highway). My fix was to get a new wife. I married a 4' 9" Filipinia, no more problem.

I would like to know too. I dont have kids but I do have tall freinds and I am 6'3" so my drivers seat is all the way back.

There is a fairly recent thread in the builders corner, titled "just another trunk idea". Sorry, no link cause I'm on the iPhone app and can't figure out how to copy a link to a thread. There is a post in there where a guy built some simple relocation brackets from a piece of square stock, and retained all the factory mounts and functionality. Have a look.

I'm also interested in moving the seat as my boys get bigger. The car seat requires a little yield, but not as much as the 13 year old brother! My only concern it that the seat being back, looks like it leaves too much room on the side for the seatbelt to be effective in that direction.

For sure you can move it, if you have some minor fab' skills. I would move it back "one bolt" so that the front bolt will now fit in the rear hole. Drill a hole and weld a nut onto some metal backing and weld that to the underside of the floor plan. The seat catch thing will need to be moved back as well as the seat belt holder on the floor. To do the seat belt you will probably need to drop the gas tank to gain access to be able to properly secure it. (or buy a LJ )
