1997 tj cluster inop

Hello fellow jeepers
Ive been looking around in multiple places and have seen alot of answers towards the clusters not working but cant seem to find my answer. It was an intermediate thing but now they just went dead. Everything else still works, radio, lights, blinkers, etc. There is no CEL on (which I know there should be) but the airbag light and the brake light are on in the dash. When the key is off all the needles sit dead in their positions, but when koeoff, the oil pressure gauge will slightly move up to the 0 mark. checked the fuses - ok. I have taken the dash apart and cleaned and greased the plugs. Cleaned the ground strap going from the radio to the metal piece behind the cluster, cleaned and greased all the pcm plugs and other plugs on the fire wall. Cleaned and greased the plug under the dash kind of up from the clutch pedal and still no change. Is there any other grounds I could be missing? Or any other directions I could go before spending the money on possibly what could be a pcm or cluster? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you much,
Cody

Add on - When turning the key to the on position, the check gauges, shift light, seatbelt, all come on. The check engine light is the only light not turning on when turning the key on. Then when cranking over all the needles bounce for a second then drop to dead position once engine is running.

First does the cluster self check work normally

Here is what should happen with a cluster self check on a 98 TJ or XJ

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=_Yh0I_DV11U

If that works normally problem is CCD bus twisted pair

If it does not do self check issue is cluster or power or ground to cluster

how do you perform that self check? is that just when you turn the key on it runs through that cycle? If so, no that is not working. When the key is turned on, only the airbag, seatbelt, shift light, brake light come on. And the oil pressure gauge goes from its resting position to 0. I read somewhere about replacing the plugs with a repair kit, could this be the case? Also do you know where other grounds for the circuit would be located.

Thanks for the reply,
Cody

Nope not just key on gotta do this

To run the cluster self diagnostic test, push and hold the trip/reset button then turn the key to the on position and let go the trip button once you see the test commence. The lights and needles will perform a nice little show for you if all is well.

Cluster ground is typically on a screw on the left front speaker

So if the gauges are working with the test its the CCD bus? What route should I go to troubling shooting the problem?

On the 1997 the CCD bus is a twisted pair of wires that connects three things
The PCM
The cluster
The air bag module

Check the connections and condition of the wires

I am also having the exact same issue. Anyone solve this problem or have any progress?

I have determined the following: If the cluster self diagnostic test works OK then it is not a ground or power issue. It is an issue with the CCD bus. The CCD bus is suppose to be a twisted pair of wires. My CCD bus wires going into the dash cluster do not seem to have any twist to them. I am going to try to trace them back as far as I can and add a twist to the two wires. I will post if any progress is made.

Adding twist would make no difference.... the wires are twisted to cancel out interference.... they would still operate the cluster

Did anyone figure this out. I have the same problem. My Jeep was running good one day and all the sudden died. Never started back up. Gauges went dead. I change the PCM now it starts and runs. Just no gauges. Everything thing els works fine. Have tried everything that it’s talked about doing on these forums and even did the justask thing.

I experienced "No Buss" just after purchasing my Jeep in '08, and this is what I found that solved my Issue. Replace both battery cables, battery and thoroughly cleaned the connections on the block, starter, and PCM (Power Control Module) NOT ECU/ECM.

Cudos Jerry!
