1998 Wrangler Sport Problems

I just bought a 1998 Wrangler Sport. It has the 4.0l and the manual transmission and 171,xxx miles. I have had this random problem of it not turning over. Then when I let off the key, and try again it starts right up. Today it started right up, but the radio and my heat wouldn't work. But when I shut it off and restarted it everything worked again.
I am new to Jeeps and have no idea where to start looking for the problem.

Sounds like the ignition switch is on it's way out.

As I've been reading the other possible culprits could be fuel pump, or starter. How would I know where the problem is coming from without replacing all three things and seeing if the problem will go away?

If you hear clicking coming from the front passenger side underneath your jeep when you turn the key? That's the noise the starter will make. That or one single click if it's really done.

Not turning over, no heat, and no dash lights sure sounds electrical. Have your batter and alternator checked. Your starter needs lots of amps to crank the car over. Stay away from that fuel pump until you are certain your battery and alternator are proven good.

Definitely sounds like an electrical problem. Check your starter and battery grounds. Also battery terminals for corrosion.

There's no weird noises. No clicks, sounds just like its trying to start normally, but won't.

Thank you so much! I will have both my battery and alternator tested today after work.

Thanks. I will buy a new one today, and have everything tested as well, just as a safety precaution.

x2 on the ignition switch. You'll need a #10 tamper proof torx bit to get it off.
