2.4 and 4th grear

I have an 03 tj with the 2.4L. when im on the highway shifting into 4th the engine really feels like it bogs down almost as if the wheels are not spinning and it makes a small jump for a second. only gear it does it in. also 4th gear has no power at all when climbing unless im high in rpm, gears 1-3 are alright when gaining speed or climbing

What size tires, what gears are you running.

I usually engage OD at 55mph+. Not good for slower speeds.

The 5th gear on a manual in the TJ is overdrive or OD except for the 6 speed where 6th is an OD gear

Basically in all the gears below 4th on 5 SPd or 5th on 6 speed the tranny output spins slower than the input

Then on 4th (5th on 6 speed) it is one to one with input and output spinning at same speed (rpm)

Then the last gear is overdrive with output faster than the input

Not that way on every 5 or 6 speed but true for the TJ tranny

On the new Miata or the Fiat knockoff one has a six speed manual without overdrive and a really high (low numerically) rear end gearing

Basically little engine big heavy non aerodynamic vehicle the engine needs a bigger lever arm advantage to accelerate up a hill hence a lower gear is needed.

Keep using the lower gear or regear axles or get smaller tires or a bigger engine either bigger displacement or forced induction

On my 2.4, I do have to keep the bugger wound up over 2500, before it will really do the trick. So, I tend to use only up to 5th, (I have an 06, 6 speed), I think these little dual overhead cammers can spin a whole lot faster than the 2.5 which has more torque, but less HP at speed. In any case, you will never be winning any drag races over about 30 MPH! Off road, you will be fine, as the diff gears are at least 4.10 to 1, and low range is 2-1!
