2.5->4.0 Swap Questions

I have a 98 Wrangler SE with the 2.5L. I'm wanting to do a swap for a 4.0... I'm wondering if I can take out the 2.5 and drop in the 4.0 and not have to change anything? If I do have to change stuff, what all do I have to change? Trans? The 2.5 is just not enough power for me and I also want to be able to easily roll 35's or 37's. Thank you in advance!!

Tranny, clutch, flywheel, motor mounts, wiring, computer. If I were going to do a swap, I'd do with a 5.3.

Why a 5.3? Is that a easy one to swap?

If it were mine, I'd sell it and buy a 4.0. If the 2.5 was shot, I'd throw a rebuilt in it or rebuild it, then sell it and buy a 4.0.

I understand. I'm stating that if it were me, I'd sell the 2.5 Jeep and buy a 4.0 Jeep rather than do that swap. I've swapped a big 6 into a 1976 2002, I've done a 283 into a Porsche 914, a couple S10 V8 swaps, and my next swap project is going to be another 240Z, so I'm not afraid to swap stuff it just doesn't add up to me to mess with the 2.5 to 4.0 swap.

For a whole host of reasons. You can find them abundantly in junk yards. The aftermarket support for them is phenomenal. They respond very well to NA mods. They are very efficient. And they make adapters for them to bolt to an AX15 (5 speed from 4.0 Jeep). You'd still have to source the 4.0 tranny, but it would simplify having a stock style tranny.

X2

The amount of work to swap a 5.3 is about the same effort as a 4.0. Plus the 5.3 is a much better engine, imo.

I would do the 4.0 as wiring is minimal except for motor mounts it is all bolt on

And XJ are cheep and plentiful

For engine any 91-99 XJ and get PCM and if donor auto also get TCM

For tranny if you want to go 5 SPd AX-15 from a Cherokee or YJ TJ but always 95 or newer
(For an XJ donor need to drill holes to reclocking transfer case)

If you want auto use 98-99 XJ 4.0 and auto just be sure to pull PCM and TCM
You get a better than any TJ OD auto and the 20 wires are easy
3 are power key bat and ground
4 are 2 each input and output speed sensor
3 are communication 2ccd bus and one SCI
3 are solenoids in tranny
4 are to shifter position switched
2 are to TPS
Last one to brake light

Mixing non jeep CCD will mean two PCM (one for instruments another for engine) and lots of wiring plus nothing is bolt on plus you loose the best part of a TJ the straight six

You really should try this thing called............wait for it....................

GOOGLE

This swap and question has been asked and done MANY times.. There are reasons to do it and more for NOT doing it. The best advice given here and what I'd recommend for you is to sell your current jeep and buy a factory 4.0 model. With all that said..start your research on whether or not you really want to do this..
