2.5L ticking

1998 2.5L TJ. Hoping someone can help me with a ticking noise on the valve cover, I narrowed it down to the valve cover with a tube to the ear.

Id say you need to take a look at your valves by removing the cover. I'm sure someone will chime in with just how to do that because I dont have any experience. One thing you may want to look at is your exhaust header. It is pretty close and bolt heads can snap off on the front and rear bolt. That is my scenario currently and it sounds a bit like ticking.

Thanks, I will remove the valve cover shortly. I'll be sure to post my findings. Also, I did notice the last exhaust manifold bolt was missing

That should be a stud like the one on the opposite end and that can cause a ticking noise.

Thanks again, fixing that bolt will be my first step before moving to the valve cover. To be continued...

report back if that is a stud or a bolt that the head popped off. Guy who replaced my frame said the bolt head broke off at the block in the same location. If it is a stud then I can easily fix that. Otherwise it will be quite the adventure getting the broken bolt out of the engine.

On the 2.5 each end of the manifold is a stud which facilitates the installation of the manifold and by holding the gasket in place.
