hi all my name is Todd im new here need some help with troubleshooting have a 2004 tj and cant get it to go into park so i can remove key everything seems to work properly just wondering if anyone has run across this issue

Lots of people have had this problem with the 2003 and newer 42rle tranny, including me. Pull up hard on your shift handle. It will come off. There will be a white plastic rod inside shifter. Pull it out, it is broken. Replace it with the same length of plastic coat hanger, or chinese chopstick. Make sure it fits snug in the handle. Put handle back on. You are done.
Or, you can tear apart your center console and replace the entire shift assembly with a new one with the same broken part in it.
For the meantime, you can pop the cover off of your shift selector, press down on the interlock to get into park and get your key out.
