4.0 head gasket?

98 tj manual with 4.0

Coolant smell while driving, no smoke from the tail pipe, no visible leaks anywhere, pressure test coolant system, still no leaks, check system pressure with engine on idle, kept climbing pressure, as it reached 200f, the pressure tester reached 30psi, limit on the tester, sounds like a blown head gasket to me. Any ideas?

Heater core leak? just bypassed mine till I get time to replace it. Had the coolant smell but no visible leak at first.

The heater core could be clogged causing the increase in pressure which in turn could cause a leak at one of the connections which would explain the smell.

Thanks, will unhook the heater core and try to flush with water hose.

You can have your coolant tested for exhaust gas, that would let you know if it's a head gasket or not. The cap should release pressure over 18 psi, try a new cap and see if that helps.

Heater core not clogged, changed water pump and thermostat, still that coolant smell, looks like the ends of the hoses are seeping coolant because of the excessive pressure.

Will look for a shop that has an emmision tester, see if they will work with me

Have you checked your oil? If the head gasket is leaking you will more then likely get coolant in your oil. When mixed with oil over time it will look milky white to brown and your oil level will be overfull.

Just go by a gas tester. It hooks up to your radiator where the cap fits, then the fluid in it turns colors if there is combustion gasses in the cooling system
