4.56 vs 4.88 Axles Gears

Getting ready to take the plunge and regear my axles. I have the 97 TJ 2.5l Auto that still have the front and rear stock axles. (Front is dana 30 and rear is dana 35) I called the dealer and was informed the rear has stock gearing of 3.73 and from another source that told me the front will be the same as the rear since the dealer couldn't tell me the gearing of the front.
That being said, this is not my daily driver. I'm ready to turn this into a trail jeep and weekend warrior. The only highway driving will be to and from the trails. I currently have 31" tires, will probably upgrade to 32" or 33" eventually. my question is should I go with the 4.56 or the 4.88? Ive been hearing since its the auto I should go with the 4.88. Is there anything else I need to upgrade while doing this gear change so I don't damage anything?

For 33's with your 3-speed 30RH automatic, 4.10 is the usual ratio recommended for the 4.0L engine but with your 2.5L, I'd go 4.56. Don't get confused by the ratios recommended for the 4-speed automatic used on newer TJs.

I just swapped in 4.56 gears in my tj.ive got the 4.0 and 32rh 3 speed and run 33's.the 4.56 are a little low for 33's but I plan on going to 35's so all is well.4.10s are the gears for 33s like Jerry said above.

More importantly, now would be the time to ditch the D35.

OP, if you plan on running trails that are more than dirt roads then now would be the time to do it right and once. The D35 is your weak point, especially if you put in a locker. If it's going to be a trail rig, then a locker only makes sense. A D44 or Ford 8.8 are your best choices with a TJ D44 being a direct bolt in. The 8.8 would require fab skills. To re-gear and add a locker now, it will cost you XXX amount of dollars. To re-gear now and then add a locker later will cost you XXXXXX amount of dollars. It's best to just do it all at once as you will save money and time in the long run.

The downside is that you will spend more money up front. The way to get around this is to tell your significant other that it is for her safety. While this tactic will work for awhile, they will eventually catch on. So make it big ticket items now...it would suck to have her catch you on something inexpensive.

I actually said 4.56 was my recommendation for 33's for the OP who has the 2.5L engine. 4.10 is more appropriate for 33's when the engine is the 4.0L.

What would be the gearing for the Dana44? I like that it's bolt on, and what would the cost be around if I picked one up from a junkyard or somethin?

Set the gearing to whatever your need is.. Front needs to match. Unfortunately TJ D44's are becoming difficult to find and cost a pretty penny when you do. Keep an eye out on CL and be ready to pounce on it immediately or it will be gone. Highly unlikely you'll find one at a JY.
