4.7 Engine Swap

Okay all, I have a new one for you. I have searched the forum and not found this swap combo yet and am looking for some advise. I own a 1997 TJ with the 2.5 Manual presently. I acquired a 2001 Dodge Dakota 4X4 with the 4.7 V8 and 5 Speed manual trans. (Rare combination from what I have seen) I acquired it very reasonable due to damage from a tree that fell on the cab. The engine and trans are fine and is actually still drivable. What would you think about a complete engine trans/transfer case swap in to the TJ. Both are mopar products, 5 speed 4x4. I am thinking that besides the wiring and engine mounts, this swap "should" be easier than the normal chevy/LS swap using adapters and/or changing transmissions and transfer cases.
I am open to all. Throw out your thoughts, good or bad. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Go to jeep forum.com and look up Wheeling98TJ. He has been running a 4.7 for a long time. Last I heard he was wanting a 5.7 or 6.1 to replace his "baby hemi". He would have the answers to your questions.

Doable but I think that dodge is a PCI bus and your TJ is a CCD bus

Your CCD cluster would not work with a PCI PCM

TJ changed to PCI in 2001

If you used a PCM and sensors from a similar engine ZJ it would work

Also in any Chrysler swaps beware BCM alarm as you need to start with the correct BCM then ground out signal to perminately disable and run without BCM

SKIM a bigger challenge as if new PCM has SKIM you must have the new do at skim module at key switch and the chipped keys and if new PCM is not SKIM enabled you must insure that your vehicle has no SKIM module on key switch as if you start with new PCM three times with your old skim module connected to harness you will brick the new PCM

Looks like both Dakota and TJ made the PCI jump for 2001

Ideally you could find a 2000 PCM for that engine but you could also do more wiring and use a 2001 PCI TJ cluster but instead of two 10 pin connected it uses an 8 pin and a12 pin

I'm not going to pretend I'm a professional at cluster wiring, but couldn't you just go all aftermarket from Autometer or Speed Hut and skip the headache?

Well it would not pass emissions as CEL function required not to mention air bag control

Sooooooooo.....................

I guess what I think will be the easiest, by listening to you guys advice and input is to find a PCI gauge cluster from an 01-02 TJ. This should allow the use of the 01 Dakota 4.7 PCI computer. They appear to be readily available on Ebay. A bit of extra wiring, but I'll have the Dakota harness to pull from also. Considering that a Dakota V8 with manual AND 4x4 is relatively difficult to find at a reasonable price, it would be a shame not to use this one. Add an A/C kit from jeep air and it should make for a nice DD. Opinions?

And here is an even crazier thought. Since the Jeep is more of a DD than a mudder of climber, mainly the gravel roads going up towards my place in the mountains, cut the entire front frame from the Dakota and graft onto the jeep. Instant independent front suspension! Yep, I know, thinking crazy now but..................?

A friend of mine did this, he used a 4.7 out of a Geand Cherokee, his TJ was 01 or 02 everything worked as if factory.

4.7 in grand Cherokee was not until WJ in 1999
So if was a 99-04 was PCI bus
If 05-09 then CAN bus

Now if his TJ was 2001 or newer it was PCI bus
So if it was a Grand Cherokee of 99-04 and TJ was 2001 or newer both PCI bus so would work pretty much plug and play

Would it be possible to use the harness and all associated "boxes" from the 01 PCI Dakota. I already have the entire vehicle, so parts such as this are no problem. Use Dakota harness (converted/simplified), ECM(reflashed if needed), Airbag module and even Skim module if needed, along with acquiring a 01 TJ PCI dash cluster.

First run the vin of the dodge in the online site to see if it has SKIM but also look for remote alarm as that is not skim I think they call it VATS but it also shuts engine off after 2 seconds however if you have the BCM you can start then ground out to disable for good the alarm portion

Next I don't know but given the explosive function of the airbags I would be reluctant to hook my airbags to a module designed for another vehicle without significant documentation
