'98 Sahara cranks but won't turn over after tuneup

A friend just replaced the distributer cap, ignition bud and plugs on my '98 jeep wrangler and now when the engine is cold it just cranks without starting on the first try but starts right up on the second. Any ideas on why it is doing this? It started fine before the tune up. The battery is at 14 volts and the fuel filter was changed 2 years ago. Thanks

What is an ignition "bud"? Also, why was the fuel filter changed two years ago? The TJ's fuel filter has a huge surface area that was designed to be good for the life of the TJ.

Generally this is a fuel issue. (there's an anti-drainback device that fails, so you have to re-pressurize the fuel system.) cranking engine over the first time does this, so it starts on 2nd time. as stated above turn key to ignition and wait 2 sec. then start should fire up.

Also make sure there's no corrosion on battery terminals.

This may come off as complete BS> but I actually had the same issue...any time I tried to start it after sitting for awhile it would take 2 cranks unless I turned the key on and off and then started the Jeep. I ran a couple tanks of Shell Fuel through the Jeep and it doesn't do it anymore...I don't know why. But that is the only thing that changed...I fill up where convenient. usually at Texaco/chevron, but sometimes at the local Sam's Club since its cheap and I'm there.

He said it starts "right up" on the second start attempt.

"Ignition bud" is the ignition rotor. I tried the wait 2 second thing and nothing is changed. I have put fuel injector cleaner in gas tank and will try another tankful after this one is run through. Will also check plugs tomorrow and put new plug wires on. I don't think the wires were put on incorrectly, but you never know. Battery looks fine. Jeep seems to run rough now after starting until a few seconds after giving it the gas.

If the wires were put on incorrectly you would know it. It probably wouldn't start at all. If it started right up before the work was done I would re-trace the steps taken and troubleshoot from there. If you saved the old distributor parts put them back in and see what happens. Also were the plugs gapped correctly ? good luck

Mine does that as well after a change of cap/rotor and plugs & wires. Its burning the fuel much more effiently now, takes more gas to get it going from a cold start. x2 on a fuel issue. Old plugs and weak spark will retard the fire time slowing how fast the gas gets burned making it go a little further on start up. But, you loose in the long run because your pushing so much fuel through that is not getting burned until its on the way out. Old plugs/wires/cap & rotor can cause your exhaust to burn up catalitic convertors, heat up headers, cause pinging and backfires and generally waste gas.

Yeah, right now we are cranking a bit longer to get it started but once its going it runs strong does'nt it?

Im wondering if my catalitic convertor is starting to get clogged up, that could be causing the second crank over, Im also going to try simply cranking a little longer on the first try. Or, Turn the key on to prime the fuel pump, turn it back off, then turn it on and try to start it. Yeah, I think I'll try that, it should prove my theory and tell me if a double prime helps it to fire up faster.

...And if your wires were jacked up it would always run all irratically.

"Im wondering if my catalitic convertor is starting to get clogged up, that could be causing the second crank over" Sevenservices, couldn't it be the fuel injectors? I tried the turn the key to prime first and that didn't help me. I'm gonna try a fuel additive to clean the injectors and check the plug gaps.

Do you really think it's coincidental that right after he fooled with it, it started acting up?

I doubt the planets lined up perfectly so that could happen.
Has he recommended killing a sheep at midnight during a full moon?

It's pretty obvious he did something wrong. Double check everything, or take it to a shop and tell them what he did, and let them double check it.

Hey everyone, I've decided it's gotta be the fuel regulator valve. I'll let you know after I get this replaced if it really is the problem.

How did you come up with the fuel regulator valve? That won't cause it not to start. Even one fails, it doesn't block fuel flow to the engine.
