99 TJ 4.0 manual leaking gear oil?

Hi, new to Jeeps not to grease. I just purchased a 99 sahara with the 4.0 and The 5 speed trans. I noticed this morning that there is what appears (smells) like gear oil leaking from the transfer case/trans area and pooling on the skid plate. I was under the impression that the transfer case is supposed to carry ATF? Is it safe to assume that my leak is the read trans seal? I realize that someone could have replaced the transfer fluid with the wrong stuff, but just thought I would ask. Thanks.

Yes the transfer case is supposed to be filled with ATF so assuming it is, your AX-15 transmission likely needs to have its rear output shaft seal replaced.

Thanks. That's what I figured. I will investigate further. I guess I'll have to remove the transfer case either way.

Well, I stopped by the car wash on the way home and washed it up pretty well. I continued home( about 10 more miles at highway speed) and when I got home, it was dry as a bone... Any ideas?
