A/C head unit change?

I have a 97 SE and still learning so I apologize if I do not use the correct terminology.

I think I will have to change out my AC unit soon. I am not sure what is going on. I had the switch (under the hood on the A/C tubing) replaced and recharged. It was working when I picked it up and didn't use the A/C for about two weeks. The first time I did, it did not come on so I went to move the switch lever on the head unit. As soon as I did, The switch under the hood blew off and it sounded like I just busted a hole in the radiator as the free-on. The lights don't always come on either. I have to move the switch for them to come back on.

If the Head unit needs to be replaced can I use one from a '00+? I like the way they are set up with knobs a lot better.

This morning I tried the defroster and it wont work when in the defrost setting alone, but does when set to feet and defrost. Can any one shed some light on the subject?

Wow....not sure what you are calling a "head unit" (further description please). By the "lever" I am going to assume the slider selector on the HVAC panel.

Switch under the hood replaced? What switch (I'm going to guess, the high pressure or low pressure)

If you had it "worked on", take it back to the person that did the work. It still should be under warranty.

Lights?

What is it doing/not doing in the defrost setting? Is there no air coming out or is the air comming out elswere on the defrost setting? Is the fan running?

By head unit I mean the selector in the cab. The lever is the temperature selection from cold to hot. I'm not sure if the part under the hood is a switch or not. That is what it was showed to me as. If your its in the center of engine bay, a little towards the passenger side. It is on top of a small (1/4-1/2in) silver tube. Very easily accessible.

I am have been in contact with the dealer that did it, and they said if its the "control unit" then that is not what they were supposed to fix. The control unit being the part accessible from the cab. I have a meeting scheduled with the owner tomorrow to look at it personally. I would like to be a little better informed.

The lights I am referring to are the ones that come on when you turn on the headlights so you can see them at night.

Thank you neil for trying to help.

Moving the temperature slider would not cause something in the AC line to explode/pop. The temperature moves diverter doors in the HVCA box to direct air across the AC coil (for cold air) or the heater core (for hot air).

Moving the other slider turns the AC on in the AC and defrost positions.

You cannot change to the Knob controls
