Another shock question... about extended length

I have searched and read a great deal, including the great one on bump stop and shock lengths. I'll just ask about my rear, but assume it applies to both.

I have taken out the spring and measured both the compressed and extended lengths of the shock mounting holes. Compressed length is 14" and extended is 24". I know I need a shock that measures less than my measured 14" compressed, but what about the extended length? Must the extended length be longer that my measured 24"? or can it be shorter without tearing them up? oh, and that 24" is where my lower control arms hit the mounting brackets and stop any further extension.
