Automatic Transmission sometimes bangs into second gear from first gear

No problems when my wife and I went into the restaurant. It started to happen when we left the restaurant. Started down the highway and the tranny banged into second gear from first gear. All other gear shifts were normal. Once we drove a few miles the tranny started shifting normally again from first to second. Wuz up with that.? Only 17,000 miles on it now! Bought it with 15,000 miles on it. Thanks for the help.

where did you buy the jeep dealer or private party. if dealer bring it back and get them to duplicate the problem might be bands out of adjustment or something similar ( and covered under warranty if possible. If by private party get it to a transmission shop (not average car garage) ASAP

I'm a college student on a college budget. If I roll my jeep, I'm screwed.

1st, check the fluid. Is it low? Is it another color beside red/pink? does it smell burnt? If you shift up vs. letting the trans shift on its own does it slam in to gear as well? If still under warranty take it to the dealer.

Are you saying that it takes off in first, then it does second gear to quickly. Then goes through the gears normally?

I checked the tranny fluid and it seemed a bit low. Added about 1/2 qt. or so. Drove it and it ran fine. The engine was normal temp. though and I had the issue when vehicle was cold. I'll wait until engine is cold and try to drive it. Tranny fluid looked and smelled fine by the way.

I did manually shift gears between first and second and nothing unusual...will try that again when engine is cold.

When I had the problem the tranny seemed to shift into second at the normal time. It did not shift any sooner or any later. Just shifted hard at the normal time.

I should add, after the tranny shifted hard a few times I tried easing from first into second by driving slower...seemed to shift OK that way. Like I said before though, once it warmed up every gear shifted normally.

Thanks for all your help. I'll post later with an update,

Happy to say it's been a week of solid driving and no more bangs from the tranny. I guess the tranny fluid was low. I just purchased my jeep from an authorized dealer that swore to me that the vehicle was just serviced. My bad for believing a used car salesman! Thanks again for the help!
