Backfiring when cold?

118k miles
Inline 6, manual

So it seems when the jeep is warming up in the morning it's got a backfire noise it's making. I drove it very lightly before it had warmed up and it also seemed to hiccup when the gas peddle is pushed. No warning lights and once the engine warms up there are no issues at all.

Any ideas?

Brian take your valve cover off and check for sludge. Sounds like a stuck / slight bent push rod and it will get worse. I've been there couple times

Thanks for the reply Robert.

Now assume I'm an idiot and explain with more details if you could. Or is this something I should just take to my mechanic?

Thanks!

Sorry for the slow response.

Was more talking about changing the push rod. I've got access to an assortment of tools but I'll be lacking any real specialty tools if they are needed.
